Description 'Suddenly the King cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer was there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young.'

Thanks! I can't deny his influence, but I hope I've moved away from his style a bit since the early paintings of mine

Tho not as noble as the people of Gondor, and Numenor before them, the Rohirrim were valued as they bred the best horses in all middleearth.

And had a link to the divine in some sense, as did their Numenorean brethren, though via the Mearas!

This is one of your best ROTK illustrations, showing the exhilaration of the mounted charge and the heroic fury which is about to crash into the Morgul-host. The picture looks like a detail of a much larger painting.

Glad you like - this is quite an old one now. Though there are some discrepancies in terms of the gear of the horses (particularly their lack of bits), I still like it for its energy and movement. In fact, I used (or rather was asked to use) this as template/inspiration for Gwindor's Charge  recently

This is beautiful! The horses are nicely done, the banners, the details... Somewhat reminds me of Alan Lee's watercolors.

Yes Alan Lee is a huge influence, and I've never shied away from that (I think he's the first artist listed under my influences on my front page). Nonetheless, I hope I've somewhat developed things in my own direction since the earlier days As ever, many thanks!

Yes, this is my favorite scene in the movies, and in the books is only surpassed by these lines;

"And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns. In dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the North wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last." - The Return of the King, the Siege of Gondor

I love the seeming chaos as they charge and contrast of the bright flag against everything else.

Cool pic, but why does a guy look back? Is he saying to his comrade that : " Aw sheiit, we're totally fucked"? or "I forgot to change before this"?

And there stood Meriadoc the hobbit in the midst of the slain, blinking like an owl in the daylight, for tears blinded him; and through a mist he looked on Éowyn's fair head, as she lay and did not move; and he looked on the face of the king, fallen in the midst of his glory. For Snowmane in his agony had rolled away from him again; yet he was the bane of his master.

Then Merry stooped and lifted his hand to kiss it, and lo! Théoden opened his eyes, and they were clear, and he spoke in a quiet voice though labored.
'Farewell, Master Holbytla!' he said. 'My body is broken. I go to my fathers. And even in their company I shall not now be ashamed. I felled the black serpent. A grim morn,and a glad day, and a golden sunset!'

The coloring you chose seems to be quite close to Alan Lee's illustration of the Rohirrim at the Battle of Pelenor Fields. I can definitely see where you got some inspiration.
