Description 'In 2509 Celebrían wife of Elrond was journeying to Lórien when she was waylaid in the Redhorn Pass, and her escort being scattered by the sudden assault of the Orcs, she was seized and carried off. She was pursued and rescued by Elladan and Elrohir, but not before she had suffered torment and had received a poison wound.'

This scene is heartbreaking, although I admit, I've always been curious about Celebrian's abduction. Tolkien's description is rather sparse...not that I would want to know the details of her torture. Either way, it is painful to see such a strong elleth in a situation that will ultimately separate her from her family.

Also, I agree with what the others have said. Celebrian really does resemble her mother. Her appearance, I think, is quite fitting, making this is a fantastic illustration.

Sincere apologies for the late reply, and happy 2015 to you!

Again thanks so much for the comment. Sometime I like that Tolkien doesn't reveal much about a certain scene, since it allows the imagination to run wild. It's also a talent of his to be economical with his words in this respect, although the classic counter-argument is that his descriptions of scenery are too long-winded .

Anyway, I'm really pleased you approve of Celebrian's look here - her jaw is fairly strong for a female, but I always pictured her as being quite strong in a 'mannish' sort of way, and the resemblance to her mother must be an aspect to my thought - so its nice when someone concurs with this! Others are not always so approving.

This must have been terrible for Elladan and Elrohir, joy at finding their mother yet furious at the state she's in and nervousness because of the orcs. I like how you have captured that all here, especially in the right twin's glance behind, showing that the threat's not over, they still have to fight their way out. And I like the cloaks. Those cloaks are awesome.

The only problem I have with this picture is that Celebrían's jawline is a bit...strong. Too strong for a woman, if you understand my meaning.

That said, this is an overall gorgeous picture and thank you for being one of the few artists I've seen so far to post work of her during her torment. <3

Thank you for the comment, and it is fair of you to say about Celebrian's jawline; it has been mentioned by another commenter on another website. In my defence, I think when I painted this a few years ago I was thinking of the fact that Celebrian's mother, Galadriel, in her youth was known as 'Man Maiden' and 'Noble Maiden', so I wanted to suggest that her daughter may too have inherited these traits.

Wow. I have never seen a picture illustrated as you have made it. It's so deep, filled with emotion. Celebrian, fatigued and tortured, seems as if she is *just* recognizing her sons (I'm naming the one in front of her Elladan). Elrohir is looking back at the slain orcs, and something about his look, the narrowed eye, makes me see the pure hatred for the creatures that made his mother suffer so. This is truly an amazing picture; it even draws an on-looker in and makes them experience everything the characters are feeling.

I haven't seen this one before. It's so sad, because Celebrían looks so exhausted, & the way the one son has his hands on her shoulders, it's almost as if to say, "It's ok, Nana, it's ok," even though it won't be in the end.

...Stupid orcs.

Archercaptain [2005-09-06 02:01:12 +0000 UTC]

Wow. You've done a wonderful job capturing that moment...the agony on her face is evident...even though it's not terribly contorted, the way her eyes are sunken and she looks so fatigued really pulls at the viewer. I'm familiar with the story, and I really think this is a great rendition.

You have catched the emotions and atmosphere well. Celebrian looks exhausted and almost unconscious. One of twins take care of here and pay all his attencion on her. But the second twin is watchful and he looks behind checking if there is no more threat.
I also like these shades of colors with some dark tones.
Good work

You have wonderfully conveyed the weariness and hurt of Celebrían and the concern of the twins--both of their poses show this so well. I am in awe of your ability to convey the deep subtleties of emotion. Beautiful work, as ever it is. Your perspective is flawless, the colors are as rich as always (I love your coloring in particular).

It is so comforting and delightful to see such work in the world. It completes my love of Tolkien's literature and fills in the gaps and makes me love it all the more.

Thank you.

wow, this is impressing. There is just this quick note which says that the daughter of Galadriel of Doriath was caught and tortured and finally rescued by her sons. But you transformed these words into such a masterpiece. It's also interesting to see your imagination of Celebrían. Well done, I like it

Thank you. As I said in an earlier reply, this is the beauty of Tolkien. He doesn't necessarily need to reveal too much to the reader in a literal sense to get the imagination going. I'm just glad you feel I've managed to do so well enough in this painting .

A great illustration - full of emotion (Celebrian's absent gaze, as if she was hardly recognising her sons, and Elladan's tender gesture) and tension (Elrohir's uneasy glance towards the door). Beautiful, dramatic scene, great chose of colours.

Again, thank you . At this point, I imagine Celebrian to be a bit delirious from the poison, so what you say about her hardly recognising her sons (and thus, their worried, concerned expressions) really pleased me. Thanks for the too, it's greatly appreciated!

Yessss! These are the peet pieces I live for! a)the beautiful cloaks. b)the emotion instilled with care into the expressions and poses. c)the temperament and tone the piece sets. This is just so tragic. Bleh, again I'm at a loss for words. Eloquency has flown far away from me. I wish I could catch it. Can I simply say I'm going to favorite this? I adore the look of anguish of her face. Tis perfectly weary and worn.

I'm so glad that you finally got round to drawing this! Ever since I read that line in the book all those years ago, this image has been playing in my mind, and it's great to finally see a good rendition of this tangible on paper. In fact, probably the only rendition of it on paper. I'm glad that you managed to portray it so well first time round. It's a great depiction of Celebrian and her sons, characters that one barely sees, and yet have such a distinguished heritage and history. That's part of the reason why I love seeing your pictures - because you depict scenes and people that are so vital to the history of Middle Earth. Great work on the shading, as usual. I feel it's relatively simple to some of the other paintings you've done, but that's no bad thing really, since it feels less epic and more personal as a painting.

So sorry for the extremely late reply. God, I let my comments build up too much ! I'm so glad you like this piece, sis, since of course it was a request on your behalf. I know I haven't seen many portrayals of these characters, and particularly not of this specific scene at least. It's always nice to portray something that hasn't really been done before, so I guess I should be thanking you in a way for giving me the idea in the first place.

Come to think of it, I think this is the only other alternative version of the scene that I've seen portrayed before: [link]

Ludi-Price In reply to peet [2005-07-12 19:59:26 +0000 UTC]

No worries, i tend to let my comments build up way too much as well, it's just a case of knocking them down bit by bit. Yeah, I suppose you're more likely to depict something as clearly as you see it in your head if it hasn't been tainted by anyone else's visions. I suppose that's why i gave you that list - because my vision of these scenes is so clear, and I haven't seen them depicted yet. Apart from Tar-Miriel and Galadriel giving Gimli the lock of hair.

True, true. It is a good list that you gave me, but some of the ideas on there are daunting prospects! But I'm sure I'll get round to each one of them one day... I stress that -- 'one day' .

I really love this piece. You did a wonderful job on the composition. The colors and lighting you used really helps bring out a sorrowful, melancholy sort of mood. And um, not to be random or anything but I really like how you added the deep shadows around her eyes, they give her a look that's pained, and tired yet at the same time she still looks graceful. Eh, sorry, maybe that's just my wierd interpretation. Anyhow, lovely attention to detail. Great work.

peet In reply to suetlilanglz [2005-06-13 15:16:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much indeed. No, that's not a weird interpetation at all. The deep shadows around her eyes are indeed there to illustrate the pain she's in, and to show that the poisened wound she has received is effecting her as well. Morover, I think it adds to the natural deep sockets that I sometimes like to portray in certain Eldar.

Great painting, really shows pain and sorrow. I think sorrow is the strongest here.
There is very subtle emotion and understanding between mother and son
Celebrian is noble and strong woman here - emotionally and in body, resemblance with Galadriel is really visible in her!

That's the way I see Galadriel - 'Man Maiden' and 'Noble Maiden' in one - strong, tall, subtle and noble. And that what your Celebrian is

I liked Cate Blanchett as Galadriel in the movie, but she wasn't Artanis from the Silmarillion.

BTW, I see the ears compromise here I thought of it, too. And changed my mind for just a little compromise also, but still my elven ears are not pointed (although I can't draw ears, still ).
