A beautiful picture of two of my fave characters of Tolkien's Middle Earth histories. It's nice to finally see a lovely portrayal of Finduilas. You're definitely improving all the time - although I still think you need to work on your anatomy in some places (like in Turin's shoulder area), you've still excelled beyond anything I would ever have thought. This would make a great mural on a wall - if there's ever a house that would take murals on their walls nowadays! I don't know why, the idea just strikes me. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Ludi ! I'm really pleased that you've noted improvement in my work over the years, and of course for the support that you constantly provide. Don't think it's unappreciated . I agree that my anatomy work still suffers a bit, but I suppose that's just my 'problem area'. Hopefully I'll steadily improve bit by bit in that department.

Have you not seen any other portrayals of Finduilas yet?

Ludi-Price In reply to peet [2005-07-07 19:54:53 +0000 UTC]

That's okay. Everyone has their problem area, we just need to work on them that's all. At least you're brave enough to do so, I usually avoid landscapes like the plague! No need to thank me, it's my duty as your big sis to encourage you!

very nice- i love your technique and how you depict these characters-its very interesting to see it. While i love most of the stuff in the Silmarillion dealing with men and elves...for some reason i prefer to draw the Valar and i am fascinated with them. But nevertheless, a great picture of these two! kudos on a job well done...*i need to do some more tolkien art-ive been slacking*

Thank you very much, I'm glad you like my style. As much as I love the Valar, I find them a daunting proposition to portray in illustration. Their beauty and magnificence, as well as their humble wisdom is something that I'm not sure how to portray. Apart from 'The Two Trees of Valinor', I usually stay away from any images to do with the Blessed Realm. However, I may have to change that stance in the future .

Auraine2 In reply to peet [2005-05-27 23:25:14 +0000 UTC]

yea i definately agree, they are a difficult task and i definately feel the few pics i have done of them did not do them justice. but until i get better with prismacolor a lot of my drawings also arent given justice The thing i do like about drawing them-is that i can design whatever type of dress i want for them-and the more elaborate the better-but the problem i run into is expression on their faces. It is like you say, very hard to show their beauty and wisdom-especially for me since im still learning a lot about technique and coloring. But, i do hope that you will grow comfortable with drawing them-i thought the Two Trees you did was very beautiful and from your other artwork that i have seen--i definately feel you could in fact do them great justice

Well thank you very much. You're right that whilst the Valar are difficult to draw, at the same time there's a certain amount of freedom involved, since they're not explicitely described anywhere. I may give it a go sometime, but there are already so many rich scenes to portray outside of Valinor that it may be a while before I do so.

One day you're going to run out of Tolkien images to paint ... But hopefully that won't be any time soon!

Have I told you how much I love your faces? They really are intrinsically Elvish - the long, patrician features are perfect. Not that I'm saying Elves are austere, but you have to admit, if you were the most beautiful thing in Middle Earth, wouldn't you emanate a lot of pride?

Anyway, it's a beautiful painting - both peaceful and forboding ... or maybe I'm reading too much into it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

peet In reply to Degare [2005-05-26 14:16:17 +0000 UTC]

On the contrary my dear - I fear that I won't have the time to paint all the Tolkien images that I want to, simply because there are so many and there is so little time!

I'm glad you like the way I portray elvish faces. You're right, I think that if there was one major 'weakness' in the elves as a race, I think it was in their tendency to harbour pride, even if their original motives for this fact weren't dishonourable. Even more so with the Noldor I think, as history would suggest.

I don't think you're reading too much into it. Indeed, read into what you will, that is what it's there for .

This is a beautiful piece, Peet.
I just love her classical features. I have always admired the way you draw faces. And I love the way her hair cascades down her shoulders like a waterfall.
Also- the stonework is just fantastic. I have never attempted to paint stone before, and seeing this piece makes me want to give it a try! I especially like the detail and shading on that little table. Yep, I am most inspired!
I think you are definitely moving ahead at a rapid pace with your art. It's most fun to sit and see what you produce next

Thanks very much hun! I think you're improving in leaps and bounds as well, and I'm always anxious to see what you produce next . I'm glad I've inspired you to attempt some stonework. I readily admit that I'm less fond of drawing/painting archetecture simply because I find it so much harder. Patterns and parrallel lines are so rigid and strict compared to nature, and therefore the realism of certain structures is more difficult to display, in my opinion.

Glad you like the archetecture. I find it harder to paint than nature, since the rules are stricter in a way, if you know what I mean.

Túrin looks very good here, I wondered once if he had beard Very good capture of bothy of them and situation

Ps. Again association - Marlena Dietrich?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

peet In reply to Sirielle [2005-05-24 23:46:55 +0000 UTC]

Again, thank you very much. I usually draw Túrin with a beard (only portrayed as a child have I thus far painted him without one) since he's usually in the wild and is said to be a bit 'unkempt'. But I wondered whether or not give him one here, with his stay in Nargothrond. I decided that he'd sometimes wear one, despite his environment, just to remind him of his mortal lineage, and to show that he's a bit of a rebel.

As for Marlena Dietrich? Well no, she wasn't an influence but I can definitely see the association. She was a very good looking woman .

Sirielle In reply to peet [2005-05-24 23:58:41 +0000 UTC]

I think he wouldn't wear the beard in Doriath, especially in the time when he stayed at king's court; but then in the woods... I agree. He was to proud of what he was and of his heritage, so he would wear the beard to show it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

peet In reply to Sirielle [2005-05-25 00:10:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, I guess most of the time of his stay in Doriath he was too young to grow a beard, but you're right, once he could I don't think he would have done so. Well, maybe only once, in my opinion... when he returns to Menegroth for the ill-fated run-in with Saeros, and then perhaps he may only have shown stubble. Anyway, here's how I pictured him at that moment in time: [link]

Oh I see. Sorry about that -- didn't know you were particularly aware of my work . Anyway, I'm concentrating on a piece from Túrin's early childhood next where he see Fingon and his captains in the distance, so there'll be no need for discussion on his beard next time .

peet In reply to Sirielle [2005-05-25 13:43:53 +0000 UTC]

Well, there's a scene in 'UT' which explains the first time that Túrin ever sets eyes upon an Elf, and that just happens to be Fingon and his guards/captains riding through his homeland in the distance. Little does he know at this point how connected to the elves his life will be. Anyway, I thought it would make a nice painting.
