Description 'But after three years of thraldom Tuor saw at last his chance of escape. He was come now almost to his full stature, taller and swifter than any of the Easterlings; and being sent with other thralls on an errand of labour into the woods he turned suddenly on the guards and slew them with an axe, and fled into the hills. The Easterlings hunted him with dogs, but without avail; for wellnigh all the hounds of Lorgan were his friends, and if they came up with him they would fawn upon him, and then run homeward at his command.'

Many seem to neglect Tuor's life prior to his coming to Gondolin and i always found it so awesome that he was actually escaped the slave life to the same Easterlings that harassed Morwen and Neinor.
But I have a thing for men who overcome adversity

I really have to admire this piece. The figures and the branches create an overall texture and depth that is just pleasing to look at. Everything looks like it's in it's place, nothing looks like it doesn't belong. Tuor's expression is so great and believable. I love how the dogs bring different emotions into play instead of just sitting there.
Great work!!

i want to ask you something: is this painting inspired by a fragment in SILMARILLION or THE UNFINISHED TALES? i've nevere read THE UNFINISHED TALES so therefore i don't know anything about its literary background.
and why do you submit some paintings under the name of TOLKIEN?

This particular scene is taken from 'Unfinished Tales', which is an excellent book, and definitely one that I recommend after having read 'The Silmarillion'. As the title indicates, the book is made up of unfinished tales from the First, Second and Third Ages. You start off with two narratives from Turin and Tuor's tale in 'The Silmarillion', which are both much more in-depth and written in 'LotR' style rather than historically. You also get a close description of Numenor, and a tale of the courtship of Aldarion (sixth King of Numenor) and Erendis, which is the only major tale ever to have 'survived' from Numenor. There's a lot more besides -- The History of Galadriel and Celeborn (Celebrimbor, the Elven-rings, Nimrodel from 'FotR' and Prince Amroth); Disaster of the Gladden Fields (Isildur and the Ring); The Oath of Cirion and Eorl (the Rohirrim settling near Gondor); The (Nazgul) Hunt for the Ring; Gandalf explaining the events of 'The Hobbit' and how they relate to 'LotR'; the Druedain (Pukel-men); the Palantiri and I'm certain there's a lot more that I've forgotten about as well. Lots of interesting information indeed, and as I say a must for Tolkien fans -- even more so than the History of Middle-earth series in my opinion.

As for submitting some images under 'Tolkien'. That name is actually a DA 'group' for people to join up to: .

There you can submit pictures to share with the group. They always link back to the original submission in my own gallery, under 'peet', which is the one you've obviously commented on here. Hope that clears it up. Perhaps click on the icon and you'll understand better.

Yay Tuor! Another of my favourite characters. I always preferred him to Turin somehow Hmm I wonder why that is....

peet In reply to Succubus1982 [2005-07-28 21:57:54 +0000 UTC]

Why is that, exactly ?

Seriously though, I've always wondered if Tuor had the personality and means to 'tame' Turin if they had ever met, being cousins and all. I think Turin needed someone close to him like that in his life, in terms of family bonds -- the lack of that really effected him, I think. Oh well, such a shame -- they nearly met!
I'm in the process of putting this one up as a print at the moment (and more besides ).

Nice work!! I really like all the fine detail you have put in. I especially like the folds in his cloak and the detail of the trees and plant life in the background.

I have to say, I really love this painting. You've also shown your talent for foliage.
Right now I've just been admiring the textures and layers of colour you've used, especially on the trunks and branches. You're giving me ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think this piece is quite reminiscent of Alan Lee's work- and I know a lot of people say that, but I think it must be the dogs in this one. I've got a mythology book with a lot of his paintings in it, and he's painted some greyhounds and wolfhounds. Anyway, the way you've drawn and painted the dogs in a graceful and classical style reminds me of Lee's style.
Haha anyway, I do love this piece. I shall actually read my copy of "Unfinished Tales" some time soon. I've had it for probably nearly a year, but some other book is always demanding to be read first!

Thanks again Nell . Yeah, this one I admit is a heavily Lee inspired one. Ack! I can't help it! But I'm glad to be giving you some ideas concerning foliage and trees, though I don't think you necessarily need it .

I hope you enjoy 'UT'. I think it's time that this book demanded to be read!

Then I'd better get it What's in it? Does it tell what happens on the side of the Silmarillion stories?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

peet In reply to MrLamppost [2005-05-10 14:20:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you'd better. I'm sure you'd love it . 'Unfinished Tales' is exactly what the titles suggests -- a series of unfinished tales from the First, Second and Third Ages. You get some fantastic in-depth narrative for Tuor and Turin's tales in 'The Silmarillion', a fascinating tale about Aldarion and Erendis, the only tale ever to have been taken from Numenor, and various stories on Third Age related affairs -- 'Disaster of the Gladden Fields', 'The History of Galadriel and Celeborn', 'Of Cirion and Eorl', 'The Hunt for the Ring', 'The Quest of Erebor', 'The Istari', 'The Palantiri'. The list is endless! There's a wealth of detail in there which helps to appeciate M-e even more. One of my favourite books, definitely.

Great tech and especially good colour balance. I like this for the attention to detail in the branches and for the rich colour palette. The only crit I have to make here is that the dog on the right seems a bit off. The snout is slightly too long, but the rest is top notch. I do like the other dog especially - great expression! And the precision of your brush is exquisite. Can't wait to see more in this series of smaller pictures.

I love the way you made the elements in this pic stand out - and I just adore that dog bottom left! Excellent job!

I don't think I've ever read that Tuor story. Bad Jenny! I think I bought the History of Middle-earth books while I was revising for my A-levels, and after that, I was too busy drawing the Feanoreans

I have always thought your work had that perfect ancient feel I think you can get that feeling through really well its really kool to see. I love it! definite fave

Y'know, most people can't draw decent Tolkein fanart (outside of LotR) to save their life, but you manage it time and time again with no trouble at all. Hats off... and the dogs look awesome, very realistic.

peet In reply to ElvenBookwyrm [2005-05-16 17:17:12 +0000 UTC]

Apologies for the late reply, and thanks very much for the great compliment. Tolkien's mythology is very inspirational to me, and I feel that the wealth of detail beyond 'LotR' fascinating, as much as I love his most famous book itself of course. That's why I really enjoy putting the effort into depicting his words as best as I possibly can.
