Actually, I love this! This reaches me in my gut, where I make my most basic decisions. I have a mild opposition to the title. I get a much more visceral response to something suggesting floating in oceans (maybe a capsize?), virulently hot sunlight (maybe lack of salt-free water?), and a line of death across ... perhaps an oil slick?
With some effort, I can see other connotations, of course.
The combination of colours and texture really works for me, no matter my difference of interpretation and therefore title.
Thanks!
Russell Collier
ps: gotta love that Golden Mean!

what is the Golden Mean?
thanks for the in-depth comments. They are rare around here. I'm glad you like this. I haven't gotten a huge response on it.

You don't know what the Golden Mean is?
hahaha - tis okay, I didn't either until I'd had some art history classes under my belt.
The golden mena is actually simple. It's a relationship between subdivided spaces within a larger whole, with respect to each other and with respect to the whole itself.
Said differently, a rectangle, for instance, that is divided to the golden mean has a pleasing proportion of the smaller piece to the larger piece, and the larger piece has the same proportional relationship to the whole shape. Lots of natural phenomena obey the golden mean proportions - most plants that spiral their leves up as they grow, nautilus shells, ferns, human proportions, pretty muh everything, in fact. The Ancient Greeks discovered this mathematical relationship and constructed all temples, all buildings along those lines. Renaissance artists, sculptors, architects, etc, "re-discoverd the golden mean" and used it extensively in all thier planning.
Try Google-ing "Golden Mean" and follow some of the links generated. You could also try reading "The DaVinci Code" for some ideas for how it works.
It's a bit of math apparently underlying the very fabric of our universe, from the extremely small to the extremely large - and it not only governs what our human eyes see as "beautiful", it also governs most life on this planet.
You appear to have a natural eye for compositions that answer the golden mean, and so I salute you for that. Also because I truly like your paintings.
Peace,

That collage guy, Nick something, also had a book, "the golden mean". I read the Davinci Code twice but don't remember that part. I was meaning to read it again. Thanks you for bringing this all up, it definitely is helpful to the new work i am doing. Thanks for noticing this about my work and pointing it out to me.

This painting actually took a few days because i was working in layers and had to wait for all the gel medium to dry. It was kind of boring and i was stuck so i went crying to my painting teacher. She said it's some kind of Master's technique? that we pulled the purple that was showing underneith the blue up and tied it in to marry it with the yellow and black. Worked for me and turned my frown upside down.
