Description So who the hell is Horatio Hornblower anyways?

He's a creation of C.S. Forester. Hornblower is a British naval officer and his adventures span a series of 11 novels written between the years of 1937 and 1967. You can learn all about him here: [link]

People are usually more familiar with Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin novels, which also take place during the Napoleonic wars and center around the British Navy. O'Brian started publishing the Aubrey-Maturin novels in 1969, more or less picking up the naval historical adventure novel after C.S. Forester passed away.

Anyway, the Hornblower novels are some of my favorites. The series A&E produced are good. Not great, but enjoyable. They don't match the intensity of the novels, but they are the faces put to the characters in my lifetime and I wanted to pay homage to one of my favorite prose characters.

I started this piece way back around 1999 or 200 - it's been too long to remember. It was drawn and then painted on a 27x40 inch piece of Crescent Illustration board - actual movie poster size. After a short period I got distracted and didn't touch it for several years. I really like the design of it though and wanted to finish it (I'd already invested a large amount of time on it). It's become sort of a monkey on my back that I must get rid of so I scanned it, put it together in Photoshop, then broke it apart again to work on in smaller pieces (the main file is almost 2Gbs in size).

I'm posting pieces as I finish them (spread out over month and months, hahahaha) and figured it might help for you to be able to see how the individual pieces fit into the whole.

The first piece finished can be seen here: [link]

So there it is: my own personal monkey to carry around with me for years and years. Hopefully I'll finish this before I die.

Thanks! That means a lot since likenesses are so important when doing this kind of thing.
