Description "The "Festungwagen II" or "Fortresswagon II" is the pinnacle of imperial armour development thus far. Carrying seven 8mm machineguns and a 50mm cannon for anti-armour use, it has proven to be very useful against Alliance battlelines and trenches where anti-tank weaponry has not yet been widely deployed. The armour protection on the vehicle is it's main drawback, ranging from 50mm on the main gun mantlet to 30-10mm thickness on the hull, penetrable by accurate anti-armor rounds from machineguns. The plating is as thick as it can be while still maintaining a manageable total weight of 37 tonnes- otherwise the 10-cylinder, 340 ps Neuhafen engine would not be able to move the armoured hulk efficiently.

The crew of the mobile fortress consists of ten trained tankmen each specialized to their own task: one commander, one gunner and loader for the main turret, one engineer, four hull machine gunners, one ammo supplier for the machine gunners and a driver. The commander is aided in his tasks by a revolutionary control system with electronic lightboards which help in fire direction and tank command as simply talking or shouting is inefficient in the noisy and chaotic environment inside. The turret gunner and loader are responsible of the smooth operation of the main turret's weapons: 8mm machineguns on a triple mount and the 50mm gun. The engineer(who doubles as an ammo supplier for two machinegunners) is responsible for maintaining the tank engine during missions, ensuring that the delicate engine runs correctly and the tank is capable of returning to base even in the event of an engine failure. The engine is easily accessible for repairs as there are no compartment divides. The driver is situated in his own armoured position in the front and shares the space with the secondary turret gunners. Rest of the crew consists of the machinegunners, two for the front turrets which can rotate some 190 degrees and two for the sponsons which have a 75 degree firing arc to each side. The commanders control system allows the direction of six machineguns on a single target from a good position. Additional close-range firepower can be provided by the crew armed with pistols through the firing ports around the hull and turret as demonstrated by the engineer on the picture.

To maintain combat effectiveness on so many machineguns in an environment ruled mainly by infantry wave attacks, the machineguns are supplied with over 40000 rounds of ammunition stowed beneath the hull and turret floor and on quick access points near the guns. The 50mm gun has over 200 rounds stowed on board. The mobile fortress is mainly employed in support of an infantry assault where it can use it's heavy mobile firepower for best effect, suppressing enemy mg nests and destroying light fortifications. Worryingly, the growing alliance airpower has by recent reports started to field aircraft with heavy cannon armament which may turn the tide of victories secured by these vehicles..."

Hi!

So I had some time on my hands and decided to draw this for fun, another tank cross-section in similar vein to other WWI-interwar tech inspired drawings I've done suring the last year or so. One day I hope to use these for a comic perhaps, but we'll see.

Original A4, 0.3mm mechanical pencil.

Enjoy!

Your interest in WWI reminds me alot of Trenchpunk1914 , lately I’ve had intense interest regarding WWI fantasy- but I’ve yet to see things like fantastical U-Boats, or fantastical Armoured trains, or any real attention paid to the eastern or balkan fronts, or naval warfare not regarding Dreadnoughts.

Like those one-man submarines the Italians used in WWII? Where i think they’d manually guide a torpedo in shallow waters before scuba diving away.

Why that many machine guns?
Why three machine guns followed by a cannon?
Why?

I dont care i love it

I'm always in awe of the technical thought put into your mechanical creations. This looks every inch the infantry regiment stopper your backstory describes it to be.

My favorite part has to be the inclusion, in the midst of this wildly-excessive concentration of small-caliber firepower, of the engineer's own little firing port to squeeze off a few rounds with his sidearm.

When you have a regiment coming right at you, you might need those few extra rounds... maybe. If nothing else, it might make the engineer feel better if he can get a few rounds off in a pinch.

Thank you!

Lovely tank, surprised you gave the commander a dedicated job rather than making him the gunner considering the time period this tank would have operated in

I thought the commander might be busy enough commanding all the crew in this thing as there are four guns to load in the turret. That said, this is a model II of a series, so maybe the first one didn't have a loader in...? A bad idea obviously.

Thanks!

Do you think I don't know what drive sprockets and teething are...? In any case, this thing could have a similar method as the t-34 or the BT series which have a similar looking arrangement without clearly visible teething, but rather the power is transfered through the central alignment link. Crude, but it does work.

Thanks!

Very nice,  definitely looks like an improvement over the Mark I - Mark V tanks.  Presumably it's fast as it looks a little delicate: even for WW-I use.  I would prefer not to serve in one as I'm allergic to the exposed gas/ diesel fuel tanks mounted on the back.  Also looks a little stuffy in hot weather?  I bet interior temperatures could reach 140F.  Having well endowed scantily clad female service members might be a necessary adjunct in this case?  Maybe you could have an alternative (R-rated) version?  Still quite an interesting exposed view.

PenUser In reply to Gallienus53 [2016-11-21 19:46:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you'd probably suffer from the engine and gun fumes which would make it impossible to operate the vehicle on the same crew for many days. Just like the early WWI tanks too. As for the heat issue, I can tell you it hasn't gotten any better on more modern tanks when you have to button up, the air conditioning(if any) is usually not up to the task... though the proposed extra crew might make it more tolerable.

As a sidenote, I've done R-rated stuff but I usually don't upload that, not to dA at least.

Thanks!

PenUser In reply to Zgerken [2016-11-21 13:24:53 +0000 UTC]

It might be, but only if the setting gives it room to operate well. There have been several multi-turret tanks especially in the interwar and early WWII-era, but they were mainly abandoned as a concept. Fire control and direction is very difficult with so many crewmembers which made the single-turret tanks we more commonly see more efficient. I've thought of many other ways this design would have problems, such as the expended shell casings accumulating on the floor(seeing how they don't have a collection system)- after having fired even half of the 40000 rounds, I imagine the crew having to shovel empty casings out of the hatches with a spade. That said, if the enemy doesn't have a anti-tank weaponry or trained personnel capable of destroying tanks like these, they might well be successful weapons...

Thanks!

There are some similarities there like the sponsons, yes. Interwar designs have been a great inspiration as well, people don't pay enough attention to those in my opinion. They're often very quirky and original.

Glad you like it! This is indeed just something I do for fun since I get to be the one deciding exactly what to draw and how to draw it. Having done much commission work during the last two years it's a nice respite to let your imagination fly, I have so many great pics I need to do still once I get the current comic book commission done!

Thanks!

I'd rather prefer to draw boobs for fun.
Anyway, I'm having a great pleasure while surfing your gallery.
And this tank is my favourite from now on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PenUser In reply to Vincent-Wullf [2016-11-20 21:16:43 +0000 UTC]

Most tanks of similar type ans era have at least some of the ammo stored in the turret and more in the hull- basically it doesn't matter where the ammo is situated if it gets set on fire as the tank is done for in any case if that happens. It is best to have ammo easily accessible so as to be able to return fire quickly, hence the ammo stored in the turret.

Thanks!

True, it requires a bit of imagination but you get some clues to how the outside looks when you look at the portions which are not cut on the front and on the side indicating the general shape of it. Maybe I should've included a small pic with the tank as a whole...

Thanks!
