Tempest Shadow’s hooves clacked against the cobblestone paths, as she trudged through what could be considered the backstreets of Ponyville. Her ears were held against the back of her head in annoyance, and she flicked her tail as she walked. Pregnancy had been treating her alright—it was the forced leave from the royal guard that was ailing the mare. The moment she’d come to her superiors with news of her surprise pregnancy they’d lost their minds, insisting she not come back to work until the baby was delivered. With nothing better to do, she was in Ponyville again. Seeing Twilight was all well and good, but there was a completely different pony that she was expecting to run into in the small town.

“Oh my—Tempest?!”

Her ears flicked forwards, and Tempest turned her head lazily towards the sound. Luckily for the unicorn, it seemed as if the pony had found her all by himself.

“Oh, hey.”

Before her stood a pale orange stallion, his fiery mane swept back and blue eyes wide with horror. The cheerful star cutie mark on his flank provided an amusing contrast to the expression of pure distress on his face, as he gasped and mouthed words while staring at the mare in front of him.

“Tempest—Tempest is it you?!” he gawked.

“Yes, I think we made that clear,” she answered, flatly. “Fancy seeing you here, Smiley Star.”

“How did you find—how did you know I’d be—“ he stammered, looking from side to side as if hoping to find somewhere he could hide.

“Because you told me you were from Ponyville,” Tempest said, rolling her eyes, “Relax. I’m not here for you, I’ve been visiting the princess.”

Smiley Star looked slightly more at ease, though still terrified.

“That’s... well, I-I guess that’s okay then,” he said, lamely. “I... heard you had joined the royal guard.”

“Yeah, nice way to make up for my little misdeeds, don’t you think? The ones that sent you running the last time I saw you?

“I...”

He seemed embarrassed and almost apologetic, before his eyes at last landed on Tempest’s large, rounded stomach. His previous expression of abject horror overcame him again, and she let out a loud sigh as the stallion began stammering once more.

“Oh my goodness—is that—you’re, y-you’re pregnant!—is it—could it—“ Smiley Star rambled, before Tempest held up a hoof to silence him.

“To answer your question,” she said, “The answer is yes, it’s yours.”

Smiley Star wobbled in his hooves, mouth agape. He looked like he might faint.

“...Would you like me to go?” Tempest asked, her tone dripping with sarcasm, “Because I can go.”

“I... my... how can that be?” asked Smiley Star, breathlessly.

“Well you see, when two ponies love each other very much,” she began, “Or, alternatively, when they like each other for about a week—“

“Tempest!” he cried, “What—what do I—what do you—?!”

“Hey.” Tempest calmed her tone slightly, putting a hoof on the stallion’s shoulder. To her surprise, he didn’t flinch away. “Okay, so this wasn’t the best way to announce it. What can I say, I don’t have a good track record for explaining things to you. And I’m not going to lie, I’m still mad at you, Star, you ditched me.”

A million thoughts were rushing through Star’s head, even as he tried to take in what the mare was saying to him. Still, his frantic breathing slowed.

“That said, I still needed you to know; I’m pregnant. It’s a filly, she’s yours, I’m keeping her, and she’s due in two months.”

He just stared wide-eyed at her, and after a moment she continued, quietly; “I’m not asking anything from you—frankly I don’t want anything from you, but part of the whole reforming thing was learning to consider others. You’re still a good pony, and I thought you deserved to be told. We may not be on great terms, or any terms, but... it is what it is. You’re going to have a daughter.”

It was then that Tempest noticed the tears in Star’s eyes. She snatched her hoof off of his shoulder in surprise, and stepped away from him.

“What... what do you want me to do?” he asked, meekly.

“Do...” she began, stiffly. These conversations were not her strong suit. “Whatever you want. If... if you can be involved, I’d welcome you being in her life. And if you can’t, than... nothing lost.”

A palpable awkwardness held the unicorns stiffly in place, and even the act of breathing was rapidly becoming uncomfortable.

“I’m staying with Princess Twilight,” Tempest added, finally, “I’ll be in town for two more days.”

Star gulped, and nodded.

“And if you need more time...” she continued, attempting a reassuring smile, “Uh... I’m in the book.”

I’ve never written anything more out of my realm of experience than this But I felt like it couldn’t just be left as a couple paragraphs of written explanation, I thought a story would be a lot more... fun? I hope it’s not too redundant after the last one, btw. Either way, background on the whole ditching thing here ~

Side note, I’m not trying to frame Smiley Star as a jerk by having Tempest be a little mean to him—she’s mean because she’s Tempest, and I mean the situation is not ideal
