Description
Though the Pridelands’ grasses had grown dry and dull, the blazing red of the evening sun made the savannah shine beautifully. Far from Pride Rock, where they didn’t have to share space with the king’s hyenas, Sarafina and Naanda were soaking in the last rays of daylight.

“I love you,” Sarafina whispered, brushing her head under the taller lioness’s chin, “You know that, don’t you?”

Naanda froze up at her partner’s touch, and had to swallow her discomfort before she replied: “I love you too.”

Sarafina drew back, looking at her with an eyebrow raised.

“Are you alright?”

Naanda looked from Sarafina, to the rolling grasslands, before landing on the darkening sky.

“No,” she sighed, “I’m worried. About telling the pride, and having to be... official.”

“Why?” Sarafina asked, “It’s not that big of a step, now that Nala and the boys know. Sarabi’s my best friend, she’ll be thrilled for us. And it’ll get her off your back about finding a nice girl already,” she added, with a smirk.

“But it feels different, when it’s official,” said Naanda, “Like now I have to contend with... you know, what he would think. Of us, and... of me.”

“Oh,” said Sarafina, her eyes traveling up to the stars as well.

They sat in silence for a moment, before Sarafina spoke again; “Reiji wasn’t just my husband, he was the first lion I ever loved. I’ll always love him.”

“I know,” Naanda chuckled, “I wouldn’t be concerned about him if you didn’t.”

“And he could be very protective,” she continued, with a pretend look of seriousness, “But that was only because he wanted the best for me. And you’re the best for me.”

“But—“

“If it had been me who died, I would have wanted him to find happiness with someone again. I know Reiji felt the same way.”

The moment Sarafina spoke the words, a warm breeze picked up, lifting dry flowers up from the grasslands and carrying them upwards. They swirled twice around the lioness, before the wind faded instantaneously away.

“In fact," said Sarafina, her green eyes glittering, "I believe he feels the same way."

Ever since I started seeing Sarafina/Naanda pictures pop up, I really fell in love with the idea As you may have read in previous posts of mine, in my headcanon Sarafina ends up tragically widowed shortly into Scar’s reign. It takes time, but she does eventually recover from the death of her husband, and later falls in love with Naanda (As you’ve probably figured out, in my headcanon Sarafina is bi, and Naanda is a lesbian In case you’re curious about how LGBTQ+ stuff is viewed in my headcanon, in short it’s just part of the great circle of life).
