Anyway, these are Janna’s parents! Her father is Gilai, and her mother is Mahima. Her future husband, as you may have guessed, is Prem

Mahima was a lioness who was very, very hard to impress when it came to her daughter’s potential love interests. The Night Pride (in my headcanon) does not tend to do betrothals, so it was up to Janna to decide who and if she would marry—but even though it was her choice, that didn’t mean her parents would necessarily like it. Mahima had always been skeptical even of Janna’s friends, but especially of her suitors.

It wasn’t because she didn’t trust her daughter, but because of a lack of trust in herself. Mahima had been exiled from her birth pride as a young adult, due to her disrespect of the circle of life—she had refused to see other animals as equal to lions and she hunted for sport, which got her kicked out. Once she had to survive on her own and got to see so much more of the world, she came to understand other animals, and felt a deep regret for her behavior. By pure luck she found the Tree of Life, and met its recently crowned king, Gilai. A smart, kind, emotional young lion, he took an immediate fancy to the rugged, icy lioness—she was so mysterious, it was incredibly exciting to a lion who had never stepped foot outside of his kingdom. In time, Mahima did open up to Gilai, and they fell in love (despite his parents’ open disapproval once they learned of her past). By chance, the former delinquent had become queen of a land dedicated more than any other to the preservation of the circle of life. It was humbling, but also daunting—she cared for the circle of life now, but was that enough?

As much as they love each other, Mahima has never been able to truly believe that she was worthy of Gilai, or of the Tree of Life. When they have their daughter, this feeling ends up with it’s own descendant: she has trouble accepting that anybody could be worthy of their daughter. Janna seems to Mahima to be so much like Gilai, what if she falls for someone who’s like her?

Gilai does his best to reassure his wife of his love. Once the princess gets older and becomes seriously interested in finding a mate, he encourages her to trust in Janna’s judgement: if she loves Prem, she has a good reason to.

(Side note, as for why Prem isn’t in The Lion Guard: I figure Janna is just super duper old by that point, and her husband had died—Prem didn’t die young, just not as old as she did)
