Description Sirius, newly sorted into Gryffindor, is deathly pale and can't believe what the Sorting Hat has said--in my imagination at least, because I've never understood why people believe that Sirius wanted to be a Gryffindor. He's from a family which was always in Slytherin. He was homeschooled, therefore he was never confronted with another opinion before. How could he have IMAGINED to be something else?! But the impossible thing did happen and made Sirius an outcast in his own family. That made him so rebellious--much more rebellious that a normal Gryffindor could ever be! Because it hurts so much when that what you are is not accepted by the ones you love.

I like the idea, that Sirius and James were friends right from the beginning--just like Harry and Ron.

There is a scene like the first evening at Hogwarts could have been: James take care of Sirius and shows that you have to start early if you want to become a big bully: He can't look for the hot choccolate himself

Sirius didn't want to eat anything because he's under such a hudge emotional shock. I've another sketch with the two of them on which James tries to make Sirius happy with a smelly piece of cheese. But here he's finally found what Sirius really needs--and we may guess why grown-up Lupin will run along with choccolate whenever someone is in emotional distress: He must have made great experiences with this "miracle cure"

Sirius Black: defying his family tradition since... how old is he again? lol

Anyways...Love the picture. And I totally get where you're coming from with the Sirius shouldn't have hated his parents so young thing. Would you say Regulus is a better example of what would actually happen in that kind of situation?

This is very cute! It did imply that he didn't want to be in Slyterin, though.

Thank you. I liked to draw him like that, even tough he's my most hated character in canon ... I mean, it could be that easy to like him, if JKR wouldn't proclaim him as the perfect father and a great hero.

krazyknoxy In reply to periwinkle-blue [2012-10-18 19:09:18 +0000 UTC]

I don't think JKR really did that though. She only made everyone tell Harry that his dad was awesome so it would be that much more of a shock when we found out he really wasn't. Then, once we know what a jerk we used to be, she says that he matured--sort of--at least enough that Lily started liking him, and married him and whatnot. She never really said he was a perfect father and great hero. We're just given that he was enough of a father and hero to try to hold off Voldemort so his wife and baby could live

That's why I don't hate James. It's just my (lonely, unshared) opinion, that he grew up. Unlike Snape, who EVERYONE loves because he's the "bravest man" ever, despite the fact that he was just an asshole who had a life-long obsession with a girl he used to stalk--ahem, be friends with.

Well, people do change i suppose,so fictional characters do as well.My biggest surprise was Dudley though, you know,in Deathly Hallows, getting all worried over Harry.Still,i thought it seemed quite plausible..

True,i liked how it was said that (in that terrible 19-years-later epilogue) he and Harry were in speaking terms and maybe visiting or something but not the best cousin-friends. lol
I have to admit though i liked Harry through out the seven books.

I never have really thought that Sirius would choose to be a Slytherin. Even if he didn't like his family he would still go with his family's views.

periwinkle-blue In reply to SilentSlytherin [2009-07-25 14:27:01 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. But I don't see why he shouldn't have liked his family before he got sorted in Gryffindor. It's the Gryffindor-thing that made him an outsider in first time. The idea that a child of 11 years decides to not like his family is very scary!

Obviously, you can have other views than your family - I should know that of all people! I've seen this happen, and it was always sometimes between 14 and 18 years. In the teenage years, you start to question the views of your parent and you realize that they are not perfect. Every teen knows that If the family is very fundamental about something, a teenager (but never a child!) may become the exact opposite. But this process is very messy and not funny at all. It's not something you make jokes about like Sirus. JKR clearly has no clue what it means.

Considering that Sirius intense hatred of them and his running away at 16, I got the impression that things were not going well for quite a while, and that the Gryffindor debacle wasn't the start nor end of it. Also, physically or verbally abusive parents (like Sirius's were implied to be) don't really need a reason to start mistreating their kids. The problem is with them, not the children, and parents have been known to abuse children even when they act like perfect angels, so it wouldn't be totally unheard of for Sirius to want to be in Gryffindor just to spite his parents (although I do agree that 11 is a bit too young for a rebellious nature).

Also, getting pushed into a new environment is tough, especially when you're a kid. If James and Siriu were best buds in the beginning (and I think they were, because there's a scene of them talking on a train?), then it wouldn't be impossible fore Sirius to wish t be in Gryffindor simply because, well, James was in Gryffindor. Slytherin House would be nice and all, but he would also have to start totally anew in it, for he would know no one. In Gryffindor, however, he would have at least one familiar face, which would be a comforting thing to have for a child.

I'm not saying that I agree with the Sirius-hoped-for-Gryffindor believers (I'm not even sure if his mother would have told him what the Gryffindor House even was, nevermind making him want to be in it), but I could see where that mentality would come from. It's not totally a preposterous idea.

And er, sorry for posting this four years late.

I'm not interested in the private life of any author, but I think that a book tells you very much about the way an author thinks. Therefore I "like" an author as much as I like the book. I thought HP to be good until book 7, but here JKR slithered away from every issue of her story and always took the easy way out whenever a conflict became complicated.

Since the books are so bloody cheap, I can't help but think of her as an coward. Apparently, you had the better feeling about her person than me

MaRina731 In reply to periwinkle-blue [2008-02-11 04:57:12 +0000 UTC]

^^
I thought about that, too. Whenever you tell such a story you tell a part of your own life and thoughts and feelings.
Though I ... "liked" the end (happy ends always are something good and well-liked ^^ ) I think it was a bit too happy: Harry/Ginny ( I don't like them together never liked Ginny besides of one or the other clever comment), Ron/Hermione (that's good they always belonged together ^^ ), George/Angelina ... all these couples. Well, I'm torn between liking these or not. Dunno. In a way too perfect ... But I must admit, since I read the seventh book I didn't bother too much about the Harry Potter-chronicles any more
All in all: Harry Potter was a part of my life that lasted over years.

periwinkle-blue In reply to MaRina731 [2008-02-12 21:49:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh well, I couldn't care less about ships. All I care about is is interaction and I love romance only when there is lots and lots of talking between the couples and they have to work things out. SPAM-relationships like H/G are completely pointless (they have nothing to do with the plot whatsoever and base only on physical attraction just like viagra SPAM-mails ).

But well, JKR is a fantasy author and I've my experiences with this class of authors. Right now I'm reading another fantasy saga and the story is pretty good, but I had to put it temporary aside because of all the talking about "hardening manhood"

Well anyway, I agree with you: HP was a part of my life that lasted over years. It's finished now, but there are three very talented fanfic authors that make me come back whenever they update their story

It is not possible to hate the way you grow up when you don't know another way. And even if... as a child you see your parents as heros. And when you grow up, when you become a teenager, you start to realize, that your parents aren't that perfect and it leads to all the tension that is typical for these years. And even later you will come to term with their faults -- hopefully, because there are people who break up with their families and never talk to each other again.

You cut your teeth on your world view you have today. It is very hard to change this -- I can tell you, that this is a terrible experience and it feels like you would lose the ground under your feet. But only a few people realize that when they didn't experience something similar. JKR surely doesn't know that either. Her portrayal of Sirius isn't very realistic, unfortunately. But well, it's just a book.

I always thought that Sirius was sort of a rebel to begin with, for whatever reasons. A child who just wants to be difficult, raised spoiled, in a dark family might ironically go good. Or they didn't ever really treat him right. I can actually imagine him either wanting to be a Gryff to cause trouble or not caring about what the hat says. He was always a brash, talk first, go with your instincts instead of slinking around kinda guy. He may not have really expected it, but I can't really imagine him arguing too much with the hat. Err, I hope you get my point. I sometimes talk a circle around it, but never get there.
I'm kinda new at this, so I suppose I should comment on the art. Good job on the expressiveness, James and Sirius do convey the emotions you are trying to... convey. They look old for 11, but otherwise right on.
