isn't rainfall and open water pools rare out there?

While it is the desert, they do get occasional rainfall depending on the time of year. There are a number of locations where depressions have formed in the rocks over the years, so rainfall does collect in small pools. It doesn't last very long, however. These particular pools were mostly dry a couple of days later. If it had been during the summer, I'm not sure that the pools would have lasted a day.
