Description

Although Fae’s words meant so much to me and were so beautifully considerate, her kindness did little to shake my shame as my worst inbuilt fears came to haunt me once more. My own shame from deep within myself and self consumed moments of vanity conspired to turn me from a kind being into a self absorbed mess. Yet as I sighed away glumly on the edge of Fae’s computer, her approach to my sorrow couldn’t have been any more magical if she had tried. While I let out frustrated sighs “How am I meant to inspire her when I look like this!” and hung my head in shame looking down on Lenola sleeping, blissfully unaware as Fae softly uttered to me “She doesn’t care how you look, she cares about you!” her voice full of wisdom and concern as she repeated herself “Lenola cares about who you are not what you are!” I felt a lump in my throat as I stood up and edged closer peering over the edge of the computer, looking down at Lenola resting so happily as I uttered “I just want to look normal”

Fae winced slightly and paused to think as I looked at a photo frame near her computer, a photo of Fae holding a smiling child in her arms, the smile adorning the childs face only matched by the vast deep smile filled with pride upon Fae’s face. Just glancing, I could feel the pride echoing from Fae’s eyes and I almost had to shake my head in disbelief as the child in her arms was none other than the Spider, whom I feared so much. My entire body began trembling, even though the Spider was smiling so happily in that photo, her eyes alone were enough to send a shiver down my spine but for all the fear she brought, she looked normal. Fae watched as I reached and touched the photo and sighed “Even the Spider looks normal” as I turned and looked at Fae I saw a brief scowl on her face before the soft smile returned and chased the faint frown away. “No one in this house is normal Rowena” she paused briefly silently laughing to herself as she touched the photo of her and the Spider with her hand and a gentle smile grew on her face “Wait until you meet Evelyn!” Fae’s soft tone returned to soothe me but the more my eyes caught Lenola the more I knew that I had to be better and that I had to change, not just for myself but for her too!

Fae let out a slow and deep sigh “Well if it’s just clothes that you are worried about we can fix that right now?” her eyes carefully watching me as I stepped closer to her screen, Fae didn’t question me but instead tapped a spot beside her hand as she started scrolling through websites for me “So what do you want to look like?” I looked up and shrugged “I’m not sure but just something normal” Fae chuckled at me “I’m not the best person for fashion, that’s Evelyn” as she opened up a page and chirped “Tell me when you see something you like” I leaned against her fingers as she scrolled through a seemingly endless ocean of various styles of clothes, she watched me carefully as if she was trying to guess what kind of thing I might be looking for uttering “What about that one?” as she slowed down to show me something she thought might suit. I looked up in dismay “I want to reinvent myself Fae and be more for Lenola” Fae nodded as she acknowledged my thoughts and asked “So what kind of style do you want?” I thought deeply and glanced again at the photo of her and the Spider as an idea formed in my mind and I uttered “Simple but elegant” as Fae looked down upon me as I turned and smiled at her “Like you and the Spider” pointing to the photo of them together. Fae smiled at me softly and reached for the photo “She looks so different in that photo” the pride billowing from her lips as she turned her attention back to the screen and began scrolling further down until I saw the perfect look.

“Wait!” I gasped at her, reaching and gripping her fingers “Go back a bit!” Fae slowly scrolled back up the page “This one?” she asked only for me to shake my head “No, just a little further!” as she moved up and the outfit I had seen came into view. I stumbled forwards and touched the screen, pressing my hand to a warm piece of glass masking the perfect top and skirt adorning a beautiful, vibrant model “That’s how I want to look!” Fae glanced down and chirped “That's a nice outfit Rowena, you’d look great in those!” as she opened the page and looked deeper within, revealing an outfit of such perfection “Let me add it to our basket, you can always change it later if you change your mind” Slowly I sighed and looked up at her “Not just the skirt or top Fae” she looked down on me with question as I uttered in shame “It’s not just my clothes Fae” I paused to catch my breath “I want to look normal” she looked upon me as I touched her hand and composed myself, I took a long breath and gently stroked my pointy ears “These too!” Fae looked at me with a shock and raised her eyebrows “Are you sure” studying my every move as she sighed “I think they are kinda cute?” Although I appreciated her kindness I nodded with determination “These need to go!”

Fae eased herself closer to me and looked at me with such concern “Look Rowena, your clothes are easy we can change those anytime that you want but your ears?” Fae paused and offered me her fingers again as she uttered “Once we change those, there is no going back and you will never look the same again?” Her eyes questioned me deeply as I steadied my breaths and looked down at Lenola sleeping blissfully and sighed to myself “I never did like them Fae” she slowly nodded her head to me “You know it’s brave to change for yourself but even braver to change for someone else” her words filled with wisdom as she softly smiled at me “Sometimes a change is for the best Rowena, but I have to be certain before we proceed that this is definitely what you want?” her voice almost reminding me of the Spider as I took a moment and thought before shaking my head and saying “Take them away, then I can be all that Lenola needs”
