Description

The closer we drew to the house, the more nervous I became, not of the door that sent unnerving shivers down my spine, the Spider or even that the monster might be watching me with it’s glowing eyes, but nervous because I was worried that Fae would find out that Lenola had been crying. After entrusting me to look out for Lenola I was terrified that if Fae found out that Lenola had shed such heavy tears that not only would she never entrust me to look after Lenola again. Fae had been so fun and welcoming, kind and courteous in every way that she could that I felt awful for failing to keep the sorrows that Lenola felt from coming back to haunt her.

Flying in the orange haze cast by that falling sun, the doorway to the house loomed ever closer and ever larger, I cast my eyes down and looked at Lenola’s bulging cheeks. Now saturated with joy from a beaming open smile strewn across her face and much to my relief, there were no watermarks where she had shed so many tears in that brief moment consumed by her fears. Feeling content, I breathed a sigh of relief and waited for the gentle steps Lenola took to become firmer and more rugged as her bare feet made contact with the wood that clad the hallways as we raced back towards Fae to give her that flower as a gift of thanks for letting us play. Lenola took us into the shadows of the hallway, her steps echoing louder and prouder than ever before and yet still I felt a nervous shudder as we passed by that strange door? A tingling shiver that flowed all the way from the end of my toes, slowly trickling up until it tingled its way out of the tip of my nose. Lenola started to let out warbling giggles with ever louder and sweeter tones as we raced through the hallways, but those shivers didn’t break me this time, I was ready for them but I wasn’t ready for what would greet us when we reached Fae’s office! The air was so ominously still and silent as we reached the doorway but curiously Fae chair was vacant? Mr BooPoo was sitting proudly propped on her desk, almost everything was exactly as it was before we went out to play just the room was devoid of Fae? That was until we took our first frantic step inside.

“Gotcha!” A loud cry echoed in the soft tone that had welcomed me merely hours earlier as Lenola crashed into a soft and gentle but very large, black clad figure. Slamming straight into the soft fabric of her top as Fae caught Lenola and lifted her high into the air, Lenola wailed with the sweetest giggles of laughter as Fae twirled her up and round until she was almost flying with Lenola’s little legs trailing behind her. Clinging on to her black curls I looked up just in time to catch Fae’s beautiful purple eyes greet me with a gentle and warm smile, that even in silence said thank you and nothing more. Fae hoisted us both up into the air before pulling Lenola against her chest and stumbling backwards into her chair, grinning almost as widely as Lenola when she chirped “Whoopsie, I got a BooPoo” as she collapsed back into the soft embrace of her chair. Lenola giggled away as Fae eased her grasp, she just fell forwards and buried her head into Fae chest and mumbled “We had fun playing today” her voice muffled by a mix of soft fabric and flesh as Fae held her in return.

I watched with envy at the delicate moment of pure love shared between them until Fae cast her eye on me “What about you Rowena?” I paused and pointed at myself partly dumbfounded as Fae offered her palm to me and gently chirped “Did you have fun today?” Encouraging me to rest in her soft palm as she turned Lenola to rest on her lap, I smiled back without words, gently nodding as I thought of all the wonderful moments we had shared throughout the day. Lost in the moment as I thought about our first flight into the woods, the time we spent sitting amongst the flowers and even that shared moment as Lenola cried, all had touched me, as I looked back up, lost for words, Fae just tipped her head with a soft content smile “Good” she lifted me closer to her bulging cheeks until my hands were all but forced to touch her as she uttered gently with pride “I knew that you would” I looked across at Lenola now nestled happily on Fae’s chest, with heavy eyes but a gentle heart as she rested, hiding the gift we had found for Fae to thank her. Fae lifted down Mr BooPoo and rested him on Lenola’s hair and said “We have been having a great time too, haven’t we?” she started gently bumping him on Lenola’s hair as he replied “We love spreadsheets don’t we Fae!” Fae shook her head “No we don’t!” and chuckled. Lenola started giggling as she looked up with such delight as Fae put her ears closer to Mr BooPoo and then developed a look of shock and turned her eye to Lenola “Mr BooPoo says that you are hiding something from me?”

Lenola looked across at me with her grin growing wider by the second and I nodded to her “Show her what we found Lenola” she nodded and carefully climbed down from Fae’s lap and stood proudly in front of her. Fae watched her with a curious grin on her face as she placed Mr BooPoo back on her desk and carefully eased herself down while keeping me cupped gently in her hand and looked at Lenola “What have you got then Lenola?” asking her in that soft gentle tone filled with such care and love. Lenola beamed and stretched her arms out offering Fae the little flower “We found this and it made us think of you” Fae blushed “Thank you Lenola” as she carefully took the little flower in her fingers and carefully raised it to her nose “Did you help her to Rowena?” I nodded but shrugged “Lenola found it just for you” Fae smiled gently “Thank you both” as a little wry grin crept across her face “You know what happens when you make me happy by bringing nice things back for me?” I looked at Lenola confused as a huge grin started to creep across her face?

Lenola was growing so excited as I looked at Fae, as our eyes caught each other, she winked at me? That same mischievous wink that Fae had done earlier in the day? When she had pretended not to notice me? As I started wondering what that wink meant, Lenola began bouncing up and down by using Fae’s knee to stay on her feet as she burst with excitement “Ice cream!” Fae nodded and chirped “But not just any ice cream” as Fae paused with her grin growing, Lenola’s eyes opened wide as she exploded “Evelyn’s ice cream!” as her mouth all but hit the floor as Fae grinned, leaned in closer and whispered gently “The one from the bottom of the freezer she thinks we don’t know about!” Lenola had burst with excitement as Fae whispered to me through a deep wry grin “Why don’t we see if we can eat the whole tub before Evelyn finds out?” I Looked up in bemusement at Fae as she turned her attention back to Lenola “Go and get changed while I get Evelyn’s ice cream” her voice soft but with an odd current of naughtiness in it as pandered to a still spellbound Lenola “Hurry or it will melt!” as her voice echoed Lenola took off without a moment's hesitation.

Fae looked down at me as she rose to her feet and smiled gently “Guess you're coming with me Rowena!” I looked up at her and chuckled “I guess so” and paused “Fae?” she looked at me with her grin still on show as I asked “Why Evelyn’s ice cream” she let out a gentle giggle and lifted me closer to her face as we started strolling down the halls “Because ice cream always tastes better when it is someone else’s ice cream!” her naughty grin highlighting the playful nature still buried within as she uttered “We have to be fast as Lenola is pretty excited, Evelyn’s ice cream and a new friend” once again curiosity got the better of me but I had to ask “Fae?” she looked down as we walked “Who is Evelyn?” she smiled deeply and looked upon me shaking her head silently to herself and chuckled “You’ll meet her soon enough Rowena” I rested calmly in her palm, carried aloft by such a tall but gentle being, I felt a deep sigh of content echo through me as I could hear Lenola’s faint giggles echoing through the hallways and thought to myself “Could life get much better?” as we made our way back to meet Lenola.
