Description

Shuddering caused by rolling waves buffeted my eyes open from an all to blissful sleep, I tried closing them again when another violent shudder hit the boat and my eyes were now firmly opened as I sat upright still held gently within Lenola’s gentle hands. She had held onto me all through the night as we had crossed the ocean under the gentle glow of the moon and the soft hue of our shared dreams lighting our way across the vast ocean but now as waves shook our boat and trees began towering in the near distance. Our next adventure was about to begin as we would enter the Forest of the Mavka before heading onwards and into the land that I feared the most, the unforgiving dunes of the Red Desert.

Despite the shuddering Lenola was still sleeping as I sat on her chest watching her resting so peacefully as the first shadows cast but the increasingly large trees began blocking out the sunlight. I edged closer to Lenola and began gently touching her cheek to wake her. As I moved closer it became obvious that something wasn’t quite right? She kept shuddering and shaking ever so softly as if she was having a nightmare but she didn’t seem nervous? Cautiously I ventured closer, treading carefully and gently as I headed towards her face when a gust from a deeply excited breath wafted across my face and another tremor echoed from beneath me? Tiptoeing onwards I looked up as the first trees began looming above us and debt shadows slicing through the sun, a shiver ran down my spine and as another tremor echoed I stopped dead in my tracks.

All my body trembled as I stood all but paralyzed in the broken sunlight, goosebumps began rising on my skin as I looked over my shoulder into the endless dark shadows of the towering forest, home of the Mavka. My heart had all but stopped as another waft of heavy air passed through me, as I looked into the abyss hidden beneath the trees towering overhead, the ground quaked beneath me and sent me flying through the air, screaming and begging for help. Lenola’s small but speedy fingers caught me as I hurtled towards the edge of the boat and towards the fast flowing waters of the fading ocean, grasping me gently but carefully as I looked downwards into the sriling torrents below and caught my breath again. My chest was pounding as Lenola’s palm beckoned, she rolled me over and laid me gently into her hand and lifted me to her face adorned with a vast beaming smile accompanied by a curiously naughty giggle?

“Careful Rowena!” Lenola giggled with an ominous glimmer in her eyes as she moved me closer to the safety of her embrace, my mind began wondering as she giggled “did I scare you?” with such a cheeky grin on her face as blades of sunlight caught her bulging cheeks. Briefly I paused as realisation dawned on me that Lenola had been awake the whole time and was just waiting to scare me, I chuckled to myself and exhaled deeply “Maybe a little!” Lenola giggled with such a cute smile as she looked over head at the trees beginning to swallow the skies above us and we became suspended in a world of shadows. Lenola nervously turned and looked into the thickening forest ahead of us and shuddered silently with widening eyes, she was afraid, but in a way I had never seen before, I moved to try and console her as her lips began quivering and nervously stammered “The forest of the Mavka” I looked up at her as she looked deeper into the abyss and I tried to assure her that everything would be okay “It’s just some big trees Lenola”

We stepped towards the bow of the boat and looked at the approaching shoreline, Lenola glanced down and shook her head nervously “It’s Evelyn’s forest” I was surprised by her reply and looked up and moved closer to ask “Why are you afraid of Evelyn? Lenola didn’t utter another word as she stared into the distance and though she wasn’t shaking I could feel in her shortening breaths just how nervous she was becoming. I took a deep breath and slowly said “Don’t worry Lenola, I will protect you from her!” Lenola looked down as she nervously shook her head. “After we find our way through the forest we can go to the Red Desert!” I said and gently cupped her hand to steady her nerves. “Scorpio!” Lenola perked up and chirped with such deep delight in her eyes while I shuddered at just hearing that name, she looked down into the waters and thee reflections of the trees rippling across the surface and whimpered “Only Scorpio can protect us from Evelyn”

Mentally I could see the terrifying glance of that venomous child in the reflections of the water as the waves began tossing the boat around and dragging us into a narrowing channel towards the sandy shores at the mouth of the deep dark forest. Lenola gripped the railing of the boat and squealed in delight as the tide began pulling us ever nearer to the shore and ever faster than before. The waves grew more violent and the boat began rising out of the water and for me it was utterly terrifying but for Lenola it was nothing short of the most exciting thing she had ever witnessed! Her wails of delight grew ever louder and sweeter as the waves tossed our little boat round and closer to the sandy shores, ready and willing to smash our boat into driftwood and us along with it. Yet her delight settled my nerves and I stood before her, gripping her as tightly as I could and felt the wind rushing around me as the shores grew unnervingly close.

The waves tossed our boat out of the waters and time itself stopped as we flew through the air before in the blink of an eye our boat crashed back into the waters and slammed onto the sands just beneath the surface, beaching our boat before it began filling with water. “Come on Rowena!” Lenola jumped over the front of the boat without even a moment's thought, wading into the water and turned, held her hands out and looked at me in desperation “Rowena!” I shook myself back into reality and leapt into the palm of her hands. Lenola was up to her knees in swirling ocean water as we both took a last look at our once proud vessel, now crumpled and slowly fading beneath the surface of the water. Together we shed a tear and thanked our beautiful boat for guiding us safely across the vast ocean under moonlight as Lenola began wading ashore and towards a curious passageway formed by steep cliffs. Trees adorned the shore closing in around us as we ventured onwards with determination and courage towards the entrance to the vast deep forest of the Mavka and the forbidding shadows cast by the mighty trees that lived in her forest.
