Description This dramatic necklace was inspired by a notable Mexican artist and her oeuvre. It was initially intended to be a portrait of said artist, but as the piece evolved the likeness became more vague. However, I think she would approve of a depiction of a regal woman with indio descent, enveloped by symbols evoking her rich culture.

Framed within the sacred heart is the image of a woman adorned with jewelry inspired by pre-Columbian peoples. Her dark hair is entwined upon her head and she looks out with calm authority and wisdom. Above the heart is an eye crowned with flame which refers to the heart as a center of vision, not physical sight, but illuminated perception. The festive skulls flanking the heart are references to the Day of the Dead and the important role ancestors play in traditional belief systems.

Smooth, deep brown Buri root beads encircle the neck and link to the pendant with the bright splash of green chrysoprase pebbles and golden horn beads. The necklace is strung with Tenara cording which is extremely strong and durable and it terminates with a hand-formed, oxidized brass hook closure. An extension of brass chain allows this necklace to be slightly adjustable in length.

The large focal pendant is handcrafted of vegetable-tanned leather which has been carved and tooled into a low-relief sculpture. It was then stained to highlight the details and distressed to achieve a time-worn quality.

This necklace is currently available at my Etsy shop where you can also see several other photos of this necklace. If you're interested in seeing an in-progress photo of this piece, please visit my blog: Not So Frida .

I'm impressed by your leather work and the amount of details you put into it. Even the details in the hair.

Thank you. For the hair texture I used a tool to get the really fine lines.

yet, it's still recognisably Frida. Minus the brow
One culture's beauty mark is another's shame.

The (in)famous unibrow is definitely included in this piece. I added texture there as well as color to indicate it, although it might be hard to tell from this particular image. I was basing my image on photographs of Frida more so than her self-portraits, and in the photos I referenced of her it was less pronounced than in some of her own portraits.

Thanks, it's good to know it at least reads how I hoped it would! Perhaps next time though I'll get the likeness a little better.
