Without going into too much detail Phoenix sits at the bottom of what used to be an inland sea so it's about the lowest point in the state. So with that comes the cold air falling on top of the city from the mountains to the north and east holding in the hot air. So the dust and smoke from brush fires and dust storms get trapped under that cold air and can hang around for days on end. The canyons sit north and about 1000 ft higher than Phoenix so the sky is always so clear and blue

Now wayyyyy off in the far background there was a group of wild burros I had seen climbing up the hill side
