one thing i never got about the YJ version: if he got his powers from Martian blood, why can he only change into animals?

I don't think its a matter of Garth only being able to turn into animals but that he chooses to turn into animals. Which would make sense given that he grew up on a wild life preserve and is intimately familiar with the animals he turns into which is implied as being necessary to this version of the character when he we see him and the team travel to Rann. Garth spends sometime studying the pterodactyl pet thing he meets on Rann before turning into it later in the episode. Unlike comic book Beast Boy who can turn into anything he can think of because of his connection to the Red (a connection that I believe predates the New 52 but I could be mistaken) Young Justice Beast Boy, and by extension other Martian shapeshifters, seemingly need to be able to clearly visualize what ever they intend to turn into in order for the change to be effective. There is also the fact that unlike Martians Garth isn't ever shown to be able to change his skin color implying that he can't and with that in mind many other potential applications of his powers become pointless.
Why yes I do have a habit of over thinking/explaining things that arent actually important thank you for noticing.

Though I kinda wish that the "TT vs JL" movie was based more off the YJ version. If not the Tail, then why not the Bare Feet?
If Gar is so into the 'Animal Kingdom' then why not allow an aspect of that feral/primal nature of sensing his surroundings?
Ah well, ya can't expect everything.
Still, rumors are that a 3rd season of YJ is in the works, if the show is successful on Netflix.

Personally I'm for Gar wearing a white and purple suit, but this is totally awesome!
The YJ Monkey look is a nice touch, makes him more of a beast!

Presently, the darker outfit is meant to reflect the more covert ops of the Outsiders, which he is a member of in Earth-27.
He is one of the mentors of the Titans program, but also joins the Outsiders on big missions

You have seen quite a few... Nightwing, Huntress, Red Hood, Black Bat, Question, Batwoman, Red Robin, Batgirl, Cyborg, and Raven are all reserve members who do rotations with the team.
Arsenal and Katana are both full-time members, as is Starfire. Also, Grace Choi (who needs a codename? Not her!), Indigo, and some others.

I always thought his look... was... silly. Reminded me too much of Super-Skrull, with the different elemental body parts. Though, I would consider including him if I came up with a decent redesign idea.

His suit is a Martian bio-weave suit, responds to his thoughts. It was a birthday gift from M'gann who got tired of seeing his green butt all the time.

Don't think I'd buy him turning into a fly, cuz those're insects, NOT animals & although the recent TT vs JL movie had him tailless, I wish he'd ditch the shoes to keep up with his Animal Instincts such as "Sleeping in the Nude".
