Before a certain Frank Miller created a new version of Batman aimed at grown ups in the Dark Knight Returns writer Dennis O'Neal worked with artist Neal Adams to have a more serious take on the Caped Crusader but also be accessible to kids in 1970.

I honestly think Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams did more for Batman than Frank Miller. So many things I love about Batman: The Animated Series came from them!

Yes, I totally agree, Ra's Al Ghul, Talia, Man-Bat, Wayne's training in Asia were all their ideas. Batman was always meant to be a dude in a halloween costume but Neal Adams was (to the best of my knowledge) the first person to draw him mostly like a shadowy figure. Frank Miller's mostly responsible for making a mature Batman that got a lot of exposure in the media.
