A portrait of a japanese girl, drawn with brush and China ink, from a wonderful photograph taken by Gorazd Vilhar, seen in the French magazine Animan #27.The first scan is 1928x2738 to respect fine lines, but I scaled it down to adapt it to the Web needs (weight of image, size of browser). [EDIT] Re-uploaded, in PNG format.
I choose this already old drawing to start my Deviant Art galery, partly because it is already scanned, but mostly because I love it, despite its flaws (some light distortion of face).

Portait d'enfant japonais dessiné au pinceau à l'encre de chine d'après une magnifique photo de Gorazd Vilhar vue dans la revue Animan 27.
L'original scanné fait 1928x2738 pour respecter au mieux la finesse des traits, j'ai réduit pour l'adapter aux besoins du Web (poids de l'image, taille du butineur). [CHANGEMENT] Rechargé, au format PNG.
J'ai choisi ce dessin déjà ancien pour inaugurer ma galerie Deviant Art, en partie parce qu'elle est déjà scannée, mais surtout parce que je l'aime bien, malgré ses quelques défauts (une légère distortion de la figure).

Yes, that was the challenge, to make hard lines to look like shadows, not like wrinkles...

It's ok for being made with ink.
The proportions are all right, however, there are regions where the shading does not look good at all.
the light is coming frome the left side of the drawing. You need more shading in the region where the nose begins, in the middle of the eyes, if you leave it that way it looks like if the hole nose was flat. The same happens in the forehead. More shading is requiered in the righ region of the skull, there's too much shadow in the left side, making the forehead look without any volume. Since its a little boy, it should have more volume than an adult.
The direction of the shading lines in the right side of the drawing is ok, because it follows the landscape of the face. You should do the same with the forehead. it will automatically give volume to it, and to the hole drawing.

Of course, such work is first penciled...
Ideally, I draw the pencil, let it rest sometime, then I see it with a new eye and spot defects, which I can correct.
After that, I can ink over the pencil. When the ink is no longer wet, I erase the pencil.

I don't recall exactly the photo (I should search it on the Net), but I suppose these details where on it.
The highlight must be some reflection, probably from the kimono itself, and the hair just comes out of an almost perfect hair do. You just can't tame all hairs...
