How cute. Did you use beaver fur or capybara fur to photo-manipulate that Wadiasaurus?

Muskrat

I had a feeling it was some other kind of mammal, but I didn't even think about muskrats. But thanks for refreshing my memory about them.

The fact that it's terrier-sized makes it more adorable. I love these furry basal synapsids, to be honest...ever done a furry anteosaur or another dinocephalian though? Do you think they had hair and fleshy noses as well?

An anteosaur isn't a bad idea

for one, I truly do get tired of seeing leathery-skinned anteosaurs, and if something as primitive among synapsid ranks as a pelycosaur can be furred....

Early theraspids with non-glandular scaly skin or sauropsid-like osteoderms is my pet peeve. Scutes or xenarthran-like osteoderms are fine, but they should never, ever, ever, look lizardy.

Did they really have fur?

PhilipEdwin In reply to TheMorlock [2014-10-18 08:43:31 +0000 UTC]

We don't actually know.
Fur's not an exclusively modern mammal trait. It's cropped up numerous times in the crustaceans, insects, pterosaurs, etcetera. There's even some speculation that early Sphenacodonts had at least some fur, in addition to scutes.

Of course it's all wild speculation until some skin prints are actually found.

I don't think we have any skin impressions from them, but I think it's reasonable to think they might've.

Okay. I've been wondering lately how far back fur goes in synapsid evolution.

I'm pretty sure we have some skin impressions from Estemmenosuchus, and it shows bare skins with signs of glands being present too. I personally think it had hair in some form, and it just didn't preserve.

A bit too much fur there.

How much would be too much? We don't really know what the pelage of the dicynodonts was like.
