!n 1965, while I was travelling from Tokyo to Maurritius on board the M.V. Tegelberg, I met one charming Australian named Gil Lawrence. His wife was japanese. Christine was 12 years old and very endearing. One day, on the top bridge, I saw that enticing profile! The background was darkish but not enough. So I exposed for the highlights intentionally (normally it is the other way round - we expose for the shadows and control the highlights through the processing procedure). This guaranteed that I would lose some shadow details. During development, I increased the development time by 30 percent and that gave an increased contrast.

This is a superb portrait. I'm sure that Gil and his wife - and Christine! - must be very pleased with it.

I lost touch with them and I wish they could one day stumble on this Web site and see Christine's profile!
