Description This large and heavy wooden artwork resides on the wall over my bed.
Its dimensions are 235 by 160 centimeters and it is supposed to resemble a couple of planks torn out of an old mythological norse ship's hull. The third stanza of the Völuspá (Prophecy of the Völva) from the old norse Poetic Edda is painted in runes of the elder futhark (letters of the german version are replaced by runes from an elder futhark font). I also painted a viking compass (found at [link] ) on the left and a viking love symbol (found at [link] ) on the right side.
Construction was quite laborious. I took 16 massive spruce wood boards (120 by 20 centimeters, 20mm thick) and screwed them together in four segments (the artwork could not be transported if it was in one piece). Then I put these four segments together, sawed the artificial breaklines into both sides and grounded all edges. After this preparation I stained and varnished the wood and finally painted the runes and symbols using bright white gloss paint.
Best illumination is achived when flickering candlelight creates a nice contrast between the dark jagged wood and the white wall behind.

pretty old question, but for future readers:
it´s a verse about the creation of the world according to the norse mythology.
here is the english version:
of old was the age, when Ymir lived;
sea nor cool waves, nor sand there were;
earth had not been, nor heaven above,
but a yawning gap, and grass nowhere.
