Description This is my first finished artwork in many years; I started it really just to get me back into the routine of drawing. It took about 150 hours of sporadic work over 3 months. I’m not 100% happy with it, mostly because it’s on cartridge paper (all I had when I started the picture) which has a rather soft surface and does not allow a great deal of re-working or smooth tonal variation. Still, time to move on and start my next drawing which will be on a high-white, compressed board.
Obviously the drawing is sourced from photos. At top with the guitar (also see -detail1) is from the brilliant early photos by Astrid Kirchherr. I have been unable to find out who took the photo used for bottom left (see also –detail2) despite the fact it has been used extensively. I would be grateful if anyone looking in can give me this information. The source for bottom right (see also –detail3) is by Richard Avedon.
The drawing was done at A3 and then scanned twice and stitched together in Paintshop. I decided to leave the line across the middle where the scanner doesn’t scan the tone evenly; it disturbs the image less than if I add a watermark.

Three of my favourite images of John.
Well rendered and nicely shaded even in spite of the paper.

Many thanks from a fellow Beatle fan!
I particularly liked your drawing 'it's only me...'
