Description My first picture for the 10 Anthro Challenge. For more information about the challenge please read about it in my journal: [link]

Pandas was suggested by *Peachfuzz

I loved my original sketches of the pandas and as I colored it I started to not like it as much. I'm happy to say, however, that it really came together in the end. The scanner made some of the colors a little strange, but that's what scanners do, right? I know the background seems a little boring, but it was intended to be that way for a reason. I wanted to do a picture of a panda "monk" kneeling around souls in the place where heaven and earth connect. With that said, I didn't want anything else in the picture to take away from that place. Hopefully, you guys will interpret it the same way.

The souls originally represented all the rats who have passed on, but sadly Jack and Oz went to the rainbow bridge in April so I'm two souls short.

For your enjoyment, I've left a small narrative relating to the piece below. Read or ignore if you want, it's just a supplement so please don't critique it.

It was already dark when they arrived. Without a word, the Soul Keeper dropped to his knees and glanced into the sky.

"You are lucky, my son. It is not every day that the souls of those passed come back to mingle with the living."

The Soul Keeper's son remained silent. Years of teaching could not, and would not, prepare him for the moment he was about to share with his father for the first time.

"Husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, friends, and beloved companions... all remain in this place--where heaven and earth meet--until we can be reunited.

The Soul Keeper's son looked upwards to gaze upon the millions of shimmering stars. Suddenly the world around them erupted in an unearthly glow as the souls of those passed floated passed. The Soul Keeper's son whimpered and drew close to his father.

The Soul Keeper extended his hand to a spirit as he taught his son the most valuable lesson a Soul Keeper can learn, "Do not be afraid, my son. Take joy in the few minutes that we spend here, for there are many who would envy our time with their loved ones."

I love the color effect of the bright little souls that surround the pandas. Beautiful color modulation there. Wonderful characters, too! The story vignette is great - really touching.

Phoenix, I think this is your best pencil work yet! I love the glowing souls in the background in particular. They are beautiful. The description/story goes very well with the piece, too. You can feel the emotion behind it.

It's great to see more work from you.

Thanks so much! It really means a lot to me that you think that I'm improving. I started to worry in the middle that it wasn't going to turn out, but now I can't keep my eyes off it. I actually managed to even sell an 8x10 print of it to a co-worker who saw it on my cupboard.

Wow. I'm amazed. This is fantastic! I love the concept you've chosen for the pandas, and the bit in your description really emphasizes the image. The textures are incredible, especially the fur (as always!) and grass. I love the richness of the coloration, and the use of strong color and contrast. The Soul Keeper's gaze is so piercing and intense. It's incredible how much soul you've packed into the character through their poses and expressions, and another indescribable trait that somehow gives souls to drawings.

Wonderful work. I'm at a loss for words, but I want you to know that I think this is incredible! Everything about it is awesome.

Thanks Peachfuzz. I'm really glad that you like it. You're the only one who has mentioned the look in the Soul Keeper's eyes so I'm glad someone noticed it. I really do like how it turned out. Maybe one of these days I'll have to put together one of those improvement things that were so popular a few months ago.
