Description Following an unsuccessful attempt to regain some of his wealth, the merchant left for home, quite as poor as when he'd left. He had no more than thirty miles to go and was already rejoicing at the prospect of seeing his children, but he had to pass through a large forest to get to his house, and in this he became lost.

It was snowing horribly; the wind was so strong that twice it knocked him from his horse. As the night fell, he thought he would die of hunger or cold, or be eaten by the wolves which were howling around him. Suddenly, at the end of a long alley of trees, he spotted a great light, but one which seemed very distant.

Acrylics on watercolour paper with heavy digital tweaking. This is the fourth planned picture from my madcap attempt to illustrate Beauty and the Beast. Same deal as number 2 - I would appreciate any advice that might improve this!

Very well done, I especially love the bark of the trees, it looks soo realistic! I don't really see much place for improvemen, I love it. The colours are phenomenal, too.

It's a lovely picture. I am curious, however, about the border: why is this one white around the border and the other one is sort of yellow around the border? It seems if you're making a book that it might be a little jarring if the pages don't match, which is why I mention it.

You have a very good point there. I coloured the borders the way I did to make them fit with the picture (when they were plain white they tended to jar a bit) but when put together in a sequence they'll probably just look inconsistant. I'll try to work out a solution... maybe lightening them so that the colour is more subtle (at least in #02). Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I love the delicacy of the light, and the gentle blue.

Thanks. The colours were actually mostly added on the computer, because I didn't realize until I'd scanned it that it was supposed to be night! I'm going to try to make the "daytime" physical version match this one, though.
