Description
Following an unsuccessful attempt to regain some of his wealth, the merchant left for home, quite as poor as when he'd left. He had no more than thirty miles to go and was already rejoicing at the prospect of seeing his children, but he had to pass through a large forest to get to his house, and in this he became lost.

It was snowing horribly; the wind was so strong that twice it knocked him from his horse. As the night fell, he thought he would die of hunger or cold, or be eaten by the wolves which were howling around him. Suddenly, at the end of a long alley of trees, he spotted a great light, but one which seemed very distant.
