Description An article from on the subject of Fireworks Photography.

This is a somewhat more "advanced" tutorial (in the technical sense) that requires some knowledge of what is aperture, shutter speed and focus controls at least but it is also a fun and entertaining technique.

We recommend that you read the following articles before going for this one:

The Making of a Photograph
Understanding Depth of Field

Great tutorial! Question: Some lens have the infinity symbol. The standard 18-55mm Nikkor lens does not. I've read the manual and didn't find any direction on how to focus to infinity. Some people say turning the focus ring all the way to the right will do it. Any suggestions?

Hey there
I have a favour to ask of you... I am currently doing my Year 12 HSC (Australian: Higher School Certificate, ie. Last year of high school) Information Processes and Technology major project, Which is to be a website on photography and cameras.

I saw your tutorial and was wondering if I would able to feature it on the site I make. Of course, You will be fully credited with links to your deviantart profile and deviation page.

I will also send you a link at the completion of the project if you would wish to see.
I would really appreciate if you agreed, but if you don’t, no hard feelings

Thanks!

Lol, this'll come in handy. I usually slap on a high aperture like f15 or f20, set the focus to manual and put it to infinite, and then use a shutter speed of like 20 or 30 seconds.

Some really good tips there. I'll try to remember them when I go out shooting tonight. I think I'm most worried about the aperature. I seem to have a knack for overexposing those key lights.

Thanks for the tutorial!

Very excellent tutorial that explains many of the technical details of fireworks photography in a simple, practical manner. I'm hoping to use some of these tips at our local fireworks show tonight.

What interests me is that the camera that did farely well is a Minolta Dimage. That is the same camera I own and I always thought it wasn't the best in the world.

omg this is one of the best tutorial users ever!

I brought my camera to my last fireworks show and used a very wide aperture and ISO 400, all my pictures came out noisy, bright, and washed out. This helped so much.

This 'user' (i dunno what to call it) is one of the best i've ever seen, so simple but detailed.

cybrghst [2004-09-29 16:27:48 +0000 UTC]

You wont get any noise using ISO 100, possible not even noticable with 200. with long exposure.

[link]

10 seconds, on iso 200, @ f/8

Now with digital it may have noise, but that is with a digital camera, most likely on film, you wont get noise.

Yes, agreed with film. Some digital cameras howeveer have bad noise even at iso 100/200, especialyl at night. Thanks for the comment

cybrghst In reply to photo-class [2004-12-07 15:05:32 +0000 UTC]

I forgot i replied to this.. Well true and not true, depends if you are dealing with a low mp cam. My friend Mark, [link] does night photography, and none of his images, none have noise. When we are out, i shoot slide, he shoots digi. I think the lower end cams may do this.

Really great tut. I took some shots just fooling around with fireworks in July, and I could have used this back then, lol. I got one interesting shot, though- [link]

Anyway, I like how informativeit was, but not complicated or hard to understand at all. Nice work.

Breaking rules can be the best thing in the world.
Especially when you do that, knowing what you are doing, and then get results like that....

Bravo!

I really wanted to see this tutorial, it seemed like a very good thing, seeing as how I'm in Vancouver and they have massive fireworks and I just bought a new camera. Whenever I click the download button, it shows up for a while, then it shrinks to about 1/10 its size and I just can't read it. Is there any way I can actually read it? It's really useful stuff.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

photo-class In reply to theghostofwazup [2004-07-26 18:58:38 +0000 UTC]

You are probably using Internet Exporer who has a bad habit of auto-resizing images.

Once the image has shrink, hold the mouse still (over it) for a few seconds and you will see an icon appear on the bottom right of the image (the icon has expanding arrows on it). Click it and the image will display correctly.

Cheers.

superkev In reply to theghostofwazup [2004-07-26 17:51:01 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that's an annoying IE feature. just hold the mouse over the picture and don't move it for a few seconds. an "expand image" icon will appear in the corner of th picture. click it to see the picture full size.
