this picture has such a duality, not sure if you intended it. but that child is so happy and content in that moment. And at the same time I'm sure it goes to bed hungry. Sometimes our surrounds delude out perception of comfort.
thank you for this.

Welcome to earth, little girl. I grew up in places like that -- places middle class westerners who like to call themselves civilized like to forget about. They like to look at pictures, but the second the emotion wears off they go back to their extravagant lives.
This picture makes me angry as much as it makes me sad. In reality, this picture represents a huge portion of the world. To everyone who sees this comment, don't sit around and feel sorry for the little girl -- go to that place filled with trash, and help people.

It's a captivating photo. It makes me want to reach out and help. However I see hope in the little girl's smile. Childhood continues through all odds.
Your photo makes me appreciate what I have and the opportunities in America or Canada and how selfish I have been. Also how materialistic I can be. I came to the US from Cambodia when I was one years old, so your photo hits a nerve. Keep up the good work.

Their isn't much you can do about who you have been made up to be in America, society contains us.
But we can all help to fix the way those in need live.
Thanks for all the great comments and such!

She doesn't look sick, she has jewelry, the cloths are dirty but not torn.
The trash gives a sad image but aside from the dirty cloths it appears that she doesn't belong there.

I really don't know what to say.
I completely agree with 'marcie4real'.
Her smile makes me smile. And feel very grateful.
Incredible how one picture can make you feel so many different emotions...all at the same time.

This is all trash?
The innocence of this child just cuts through all the sadness of the littered earth.
Wonderful work.

My heart didn't drop..
It's a nice piece, the only thing that bothers me about this picture is that new car back there with the car cover... That seems extremely out of place... The tires even look polished. With all that dirt, the tires look like they're brand new.
Anyways, again, nice photo.

except for the fact that it doesnt belong to the childs family.. phnom penh is a deeply contrasting city with poverty to the extreme against a strong backdrop of extreme wealth.
i think that the random flashy car in the background helps portray this contrast, and you really should have seen this girls 'home' which was a pile of collected garbage and some more grubby ppl, right beside a nice home on a main road.
my heart really did drop..

Well I didn't put it there?
Maybe it just goes to show that there are still rich people here and money in Phnom Penh, and yet children like her go unnoticed.

I'm tired of seeing comments about how people are so shallow for wanting and having the things that we do.
Did you not sit on a $900+ computer to look at this, and then use both the computer and the Internet, which also costs, to comment on it?
This picture makes me feel thankful to have these amenities. The child is smiling because she knows nothing else, because she has no ability to glimpse into what we have. If she were able to, she would also covet these things the same as we do. It does not make us superficial to want or have luxury; it makes us human.
Unlike the child, however, we have the ability to use photos to peek into such alien worlds as these, and from them we can draw inspiration, humility, and a deep gratitude for that which we are able to love and appreciate.
Great use of emotion here.

You know what would make this image really stand out? Here's a manipulation idea. Make the young child black and white, and increase the brightness and saturation on everything else.
None the less, a frightening capture of the atrocities that the first world countries allow to happen every day. Well worth the look, and definitely worth a DD.
