Description The eye of my cat Yoshi, April 2011
I'm very amazed that she was so still that I was able to get this. She normally hits and run or just turns her back at me whenever she hears the sound of my camera starting up.

thank you so very much for this!
very useful critique, and kind words

i can't see those differently colored patches you mention, maybe it's because of our different screen-settings, but i'll look for them one day and see if i can do something about them

yes, i really wanted this to send shivers up peoples spines, or at least make them a little uneasy. a cat is indeed a predator, and we are lucky that they are quite small. but i fully understand that this brought back the memories of that encounter, and making that impact, i truly take that as a compliment

You're so welcome!

Screen definitely will have an effect on how well they can be seen. Try looking at an angle at the photograph and you should be able to spot them pretty easily. They stand out more than the rest of the image. The technology of the screens made this possible as different colors different differently when looked at an angle.

I'm glad to hear I understood your point correctly. Also congratulation for being able to show others what you wanted to show. It isn't something a lot of people are able to do. Keep the good work up and create amazing photographs for us to see.

i tried to see it, but i just cant, not by looking at an angle at least. i have an old, "thick" screen, i know that pictures look different on flat screens.
i tried to lighten it in PS too to see if i could notice it, but still no i darkened it in the edges though, maybe that will fix it. otherwise i dont know what i could do, without ruining the whole picture

Tapola In reply to Photopathica [2012-01-27 11:53:19 +0000 UTC]

Ah...CRT. Those work differently and helps to mask the light shade difference. Color reproduction of CRT are much better than from the LCDs that have taken over the computer industry. Not shocking you weren't able to notice the difference.

I gave a new look for the photograph and I couldn't find the spots anymore either. So whatever you did seems to have done the trick. Looks much nicer to my eyes now.

i know, i badly want a flat screen again (my laptop screen broke and i just took the first screen i found) but i can't afford one just now. or maybe i can, but there are things i put my money on first

good to know my editing did the trick though

Tapola In reply to Photopathica [2012-01-29 09:47:18 +0000 UTC]

Flat screens do have their benefits. Now if they would be able to combine the benefits of a flat screen with a CRT monitor I'm sure someone would make a fortune with that idea.

The main thing is to have something to work with. Without all the necessary tools you simply cannot do anything to the end. Not a pleasant feeling either. Be happy with what you have now and make the best out of it.

Yes, your editing did the trick, nyaa.

oh i do! i dont have much money at all, i have to make do with what is "cheap", but i get by very well with that

thanks again good to know

Tapola In reply to Photopathica [2012-01-29 19:04:21 +0000 UTC]

Cheap doesn't mean it is totally useless. Do your best with what you have and once you can afford something better you will be able to do even better. What you have shouldn't limit your ability to cope with it. Instead use what you have to learn from it.

Initially, it's imperative that I say that your artwork here is mind-blowing. Your cat has some very beautiful eyes!
I don't see anything that I feel you need to improve in. And since this is a cat you were photographing, I doubt the circumstance to repeat this shot would ever come again! So I'll focus on some of the great things I noticed about this picture.

The first thing I noticed, of course, is the rich color in the pupil. The detail and focus here is what makes this picture so wonderful. You did a great job capturing this.
Your cat also has some very healthy eyes. There is no lacrimal drainage from the tear ducts that might indicate any infection. For picture taking this is especially good, because small imperfections like that can ruin the whole picture.
I'm surprised your cat allowed you to get that close! At 7mm, you would have been, about 1 inch from the cat's face? Cats are notorious at messing up even the best photographers plans.
To conclude I would like to say that it has been a treat to write this critique for you. I look forward to seeing more artwork from you.

wow... thank you SO much for this completely awesome critique - or declaration of love to my cat's eye!
i read this much earlier today, but i had to let it sink in before i could reply and thank you for this! it made my day, i'm so happy

i'm still amazed when i look at this picture, amazed by my cat. i dont know what was with her that day, that she actually let me that close with a cam, that she normally hates otherwise. what can i say, i Love her

and i love my compact canon too, haha!

You're welcome. I'm you liked the critique. I enjoyed writing it.

Cats have many moods in my estimation. You must have just caught her at the right time.

As the willing subject of three black cats [currently], I can really appreciate this. As one who once practiced the art of Photography [although I lost all of my photos and equipment many years ago, and never regained my enthusiasm for it], I can appreciate it even more. I'm 72 now [or will be in less than a week], so the pain of loss has faded with time; but the memories are still there. Thank you for bringing them back - they no longer hurt, but are pleasant to contemplate. I discovered this photo ['Watched'] a couple of years ago, via Google [and without attribution] and immediately started using it as my FaceBook Profile Picture [Avatar]. When I discovered that you were the artist, I added proper attribution to my usage record, but it didn't occur to me to link back to your account here. It replaced a picture of the eye of an alligator, since I thought it looked more like a Dragon's eye [and aren't cats in this reality's version of Dragons?]. I sincerely hope you don't mind my using it there, and I will remove it immediately if you request me to do so. I can't use it here [since you are using it], so I'll be seeking something else [perhaps an animation] for my avatar here. Once again, I really appreciate the picture, and apologize for using it without attribution earlier. Such are the downsides of Google and Pinterest. I only wish I could share some of the photos I took back in the sixties and seventies - including such things as the shadow of a pigeon on a corrugated fiberglass roof over a walkway on the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. I was more into Architectural photography [in black & white] and had my own darkroom. For color work I shot slides using mostly Agfa film for the warmer effects.
