"the New Hat"
Hello everyone.
And, a happy weekend to all.
I wanted to share this photograph from 2015, taken at the Tucson Steampunk Convention (WWWC4). I was using my now retired APPLE iPhone 5S. On many occasions, the 5S created some serious photography for me. Although I use DSLR cameras, my iPhone(s) filled several niches, especially where a larger/bulky camera isn't workable. And besides, my iPhone(s) practically lives in my pocket.
I used the tent's canvas to diffuse the harsh outside light. The term "diffuse" refers to "soften light". Diffusing let me use ambient light, meaning without "flash". The opposite of soft light, is harsh light: characterized by an over emphasis of bright and dark regions (drama). Also, I positioned the subject in front of a table. This limited background distractions and prevented 3rd party camera flashes interrupting the picture.
About the Photo:
In the Steampunk universe, "top hats" are the quintessential Victorian fashion statement. Lords and ladies both wear them. Regardless of your life's station; adventurer, tinker or inventor all share an affinity for this awesome headwear. Even ordinary goggles look impressive when embellishing this popular apparel. And, if invited to society "High Tea", proper etiquette demands a well fitted top hat. In this photograph beauty and style compliment each other perfectly. Ready for adventures at the CON.
* Much Steampunk intrigue is attributed to "alleged" pouches sewn inside hats, used to hide valuables, documents and the occasional weapon. These mysterious pockets are nicknamed "banker's poke" or "banker's purse". Speaking of folklore, it's alleged the infamous "Fellowship of Assassins" prefer this stealthy concealment for their nefarious deeds.
From the 19th Century:
Mark Twain remarked; "never run after your own hat--others will be delighted to do it. Why spoil their fun? " Abroad with Mark Twain and Eugene Field.
