Description Took a picture of the flowers, then completely unsaturated it, changed the brightness and contrast, and stuck a semi-transparent purple layer over the top.

Not bad at all! however i've got a better way to purple it do you have photoshop? if so, desaturate using anything but the gradient map, and then modify the levels etc till you are happy. After that change the mode to grayscale, and then again to duotone. in duotone make your second tone a purple (or any other colour you want) and then in the little box with the line change its weighting. you will have to change the mode back to the original before you save.
