Heh, actually I think the game might lose much of it's charm in 3D. Maybe 2.5d, after all the 'high res' version of the game is quite nice.

Yeah, considering it's a platformer, a 3D version would probably be kind of awkward with he controls.

Given the way enemies work, especially the hands and wall-o-death, I doubt fully 3D would be possible unless it were done just so. I could go for 2.5D, though. Hit the eversion points and watch the world peel apart, maybe have moments where the later layer enemies seem like they're looking at the player specifically, have the hands with a sort of moving flesh/wetness to them, and so on.

Most likely. They didn't seem all that different to me... so I just overlooked it.
Wasn't originally going to be used as a wallpaper even, was supposed to be the testing grounds for a short video I never got the chance to make.
