Description omg, color
omg, digital art
omg, pikachujenn did this

Does this look like I even did this if I removed my signature?
So, yeah, I got a drawing tablet, and this is my first drawing with it. This is a redraw of a digital art attempt with a mouse.Β fav.me/dan82tl

People say you need to have experience with traditional art. I've been doodling in school since third grade (I have photos of drawings I drew before DeviantArt if you want to see them), and then I started to actually draw last year.

I'm intrigued, are there good ones that you're happy to show?

Lol, they're all bad.
or maybe not.Β
Β
weird electric dragon. I couldn't do wings.
And I probably still can't.
Β
"Where are my skin and organs?"
And feathers*
Β
Incorrect placement of feathers, but okay.

These were drawn in school, so no references were used. I think I drew them in fifth grade.

They're actually very good for grade 5, you were displaying knowledge of anatomy and shading early in your drawing career. I love the captions you added XD

Thank you!

I just copied what other artists did, and I saw that they shaded. I didn't shade correctly, though. At least I don't remember I did.

Lol, that's why I decided "Hey, I should make a signature!"

And then fifth grade me thought "Ooh, putting my first and last initial with my last name as a Chinese character is nice and unique!"

People can tell what my last name is now. I feel like I could write it sloppier to make it not as readable, but you can still tell it's the character. A reason I don't care about this is that so many people on Google+ lol, who uses dat have variations of the name "Jennifer [Put my last name here]". Jennifer is a common name (I think, but why would Asians want to use it?), and Chinese has limited pronunciations.Β

Making a signature is the weirdest thing. To be a proper signature it has to be natural, quick and consistent. But when you try to make one for the first time, your signature is none of those things

Is there a special connection to China? Or you just like the country/culture? The symbols are really cool but their writing is so difficult to learn...

Aren't Chinese dictionaries really hard to use? I feel that it would be a lot of effort just to find out what your last name is.

I am Chinese. Unlike my immediate family (who are from Sichuan), I was actually born in the USA.

Chinese dictionaries are easy to use when you know how to use them. Writing is easy... to me. Eventually, you'll learn that some radicals (according to a Chinese book I used) help you know what it is talking about. For example, this radical (氡) means that the word relates to water. 河 (river) and 江 (ha, another word for river) use the radical.

For some reason, my Chinese handwriting is better than my English handwriting even though English is my first language.

Anyways, writing my last name quick and easy because... well, it's my last name. I should know how to write it. I often compare my Chinese skill to an 8-year-old and joke that I'm illiterate...Β

If you have any questions about Chinese, feel free to ask!

Do you speak Chinese at home much? Or more English?

I've been trying to learn a bit of Chinese because China and Australia are a lot closer geographically than Australia is to Europe or the US. I thought it would be fun! I've only learned little bits of speech for now, because the writing is so different from English script. I don't know many radicals yet, I've been relying on pinyin. The radical for mouth is easy. And the radical for water I know from the symbol for wine. And tree/plant I know, because that one pops up a fair bit.

I love the look of Chinese script. I'm glad you do it justice

Thanks so much, I totally will! Do you have any tips on where to start with learning to write? Should I just write flash cards and start trying to memorise words do you think?

I speak English more than Chinese. I probably speak Chinese around 25% of the time.

Just make sure you learn Mandarin Chinese and not Cantonese, because Mandarin is what the world speaks the most. Also, when learning the Chinese characters themselves, learn simplified Chinese. Relying just on pinyin isn't the best thing because many words share the same pronunciation. Míng can be the pinyin of 明 (bright) or 名 (a word part of the phrase for "name"), and possibly more. Make sure you learn the tones and how to correctly pronounce because you will confuse others... a lot. I think they would be confused.

Yes, the radical for mouth is easy. I was writing the character for "yell" when I was little, and I thought hey, that looks like a square and a four! -->叫

Traditional Chinese looks more beautiful than simplified (according to others), and people write traditional Chinese when writing calligraphy.

Starting to learn how to write... I never used any special methods, and I got 100% on my Chinese tests. All I did was write the words that were to be tested once while looking so I can remember them, write them without looking, and see if I got them right. I also wrote the pinyin and then the word because obviously, the teacher is going to pronounce the word. Flash cards are a nice method, but I don't see how they are going to be efficient. I think you should learn how to do stroke order (if you haven't already), learn how to write basic words (ζˆ‘οΌŒδ½ οΌŒδΈοΌŒetc.), and learn more words as time goes on. I could give you list of words to learn in a week.

One thing for sure: DON'T LEARN POETRY! NOT EVEN EDUCATED PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND CHINESE POETRY! IT'S USELESS UNLESS YOU ARE TEACHING IT, SO NEVER LEARN POETRY!!!

Do Cantonese and Mandarin have similar philological roots? I feel most of the learning materials are geared towards Chinese mandarin fortunately for learners like me.
The tones are quite hard for a newbie, but I'm starting to get the hang of them I think. The problem is forgetting which tone applies for the word I'm using. That's going to be a struggle for a long time I think -_-

Cool. I think I just need to get used to practicing languages again so I can figure out what works for me. The last time I did another language was first year high school, which is a while back. Stroke order was something I was warned about at some point. It's really ugly to use the incorrect stroke order, right?
Lists of words would be super helpful, because it would mean that I couldn't be lazy on any given week. However, Chinese is on the back-burner for me until after the new year. I'm traveling to Japan in January so my language tickets are being spent on Japanese for the next few months (I'm worried I'll have forgotten the little Chinese I learned by the time I get back to it!).

Hahaha yeah I read about Classical Chinese in part 6 of this article pinyin.info/readings/texts/mos… Here's the author summarising the problem
A passage in classical Chinese can be understood only if you already know what the passage says in the first place. This is because classical Chinese really consists of several centuries of esoteric anecdotes and in-jokes written in a kind of terse, miserly code for dissemination among a small, elite group of intellectually-inbred bookworms who already knew the whole literature backwards and forwards, anyway.XD

From what I've heard about Cantonese, you get all the Mandarin words and give them different pronunciations.Β

My father tells me stroke order is important for writing efficiently and not looking weird. Who would draw the complete picture and then draw the sketch?Β

From what I've heard, Japanese is easier than Chinese.

Lol. I think my sister told me that both simplified and traditional Chinese are taught in China.

That's a relief, I only want to learn enough Japanese to help get me out of trouble. I don't like the thought of visiting another country without knowing any of their language, it seems polite to at least try to learn a bit. I don't want the rest of the world to have to pander to Westerners like me.
