It doesn't if you don't do "things" in public. I'm alright with that kind of people and there are many people in Russia that are alright with this. They just don't want homosexual marriage, you know? And there are homosexuals in Russia, they live picefully there, nobody bothers them if they don't do something that's 'over the line' of normal.

So from what I'm hearing, is the "Russia being homophobic" thing just hype?

I'd understand it more like a "proud to be who you are or the way you are" like you could say you were proud to be straight (if you are i mean)

Gay Pride is a part of political activism. We came up with it as a way of teaching the younger members of our community that they don't have to hate themselves, despite how much straight people want them to.
Also, piss off straightie, no one cares about your useless opinion. <3

old comment but,
i think it's more of a 'prideful' stance against those that don't support gays.
at least that's how i view it, because otherwise, like you said, it doesn't make much sense.

What do you mean, a prideful st ance?

cwov In reply to Bright-Circle [2010-03-15 01:18:02 +0000 UTC]
if you're neutral about something you probably won't take a stance against someone against it.
i'm under the impression it takes pride to want to stand up for something.
if there wasn't hate then the need for pride wouldn't exist.

Perhaps we don't have the same definition of pride. Pride to me is the same--taking pride in some achievement or action one took and had control over. That doesn't change, so it makes no more sense to say one has 'pride' in something that one professes to have no control over.

well, if it makes you feel better, gays aren't the only ones that have 'pride'.
there's been a pride 'movement' in almost every discriminated minority
(the one that comes to mind specifically is ethnic pride, and last time i checked i didn't choose to be white).
so i guess everyone is getting it wrong. ;T

Yeah, everyone is. They should pick a different term. And it's dumb that it's ok to be 'proud' of being a minority, but not ok to be 'proud' of being white. On the contrary, we're told that in order to be progressive, we need to 'make up for our whiteness'.

i think it does make sense in a way.
all of this pride is just a result of the 'white man'
oppressing and exploiting minorities.
of course there are a million other scenarios
in which minorities (not necessarily minorities at the time/place),
have done the same to other groups of people,
but i don't think they happened to such a great extent.
not that it's right.
i actually think the world would be a much nicer place
if there was no pride in being something over the other.
it's fine to be happy with who you are, but once you start
dividing people into factions based on ethnicity, sexuality, religion...
it always leads to intolerance, which leads to more conflict.

I just know that, no matter the excuse, a double standard is a double standard, and it's not right for some people to say they're special for being born a certain colour, and some people told they have to 'make up for' how they were born. It's no righter now than it was then--when it was done to black people or whoever.

cwov In reply to Bright-Circle [2010-03-15 20:42:48 +0000 UTC]
to be quite honest i've never had anyone tell me
i had to make up anything to minorities for being white.
unless you're referring to affirmative action,
but that hardly counts in my opinion.
i'm sure some people are pro their ethnicity and anti-white,
but those numbers are so miniscule that all it really does is piss you off for a few minutes, and then you get over it.
there are a lot worse things to have double standards about.

wanting penance is a natural.
everyone has been wronged at one point
and wanted something done in return.
you can't say racism doesn't exist anymore, because it obviously does.
i think that's where that 'making up' comes from.

Bright-Circle In reply to cwov [2010-03-16 23:13:23 +0000 UTC]
Penance should be done by the guilty parties, NOT just expected of someone because someoen is of a certain colour. Being born a certain way does not mean one is automatically 'racist'.

i never said i believed in the contrary. :T
but i do believe it is a part of our job as decent human beings
to right wrongs that have been committed.
even if you don't think you should have to.
complacency and apathy will be the end of humanity.

Bright-Circle In reply to cwov [2010-03-17 14:51:59 +0000 UTC]
As a human being, possibly. As a white person, absolutely not.
Though I don't think past wrongs can ever be righted by people of one colour treating people of another colour a certain way regardless of what each individual may or may not have done/suffered. That's just dumb.
I do not know enough about affirmative action to give an informed opinion as to whether I think it's a good thing, or preferential BS that furthers 'racial divides'.

cwov In reply to Bright-Circle [2010-03-17 18:17:42 +0000 UTC]
i was speaking about humanity as a whole righting wrongs, not just whites.
that's why i said 'human beings'. although i guess i should have been more specific.
anyway we've both made our points.
ciao.
