Description The smallish unenlagiine dromaeosaur Buitreraptor gonzalezorum goes for a small, basal snake (actually, you can see its tiny hindlimbs right below the theropod's mid-maxilla - no, it's not flyspeck). I've tried this scene over and over again, taking inspiration mostly from modern wading birds. I tried a VERY Mycteria spp. stork-like feather pattern, but in the end went with this one and found out that it actually works better with it.

I know, I know, Anchiornis and microraptorines make a strong case for "four-winged-ness" as the default deinonychosaurian condition, but if unenlagiines like this were really "heron raptors", they probably had good reason to lose their rear wings.

It was drawn before the first Anchiornis specimens were found, so there has been no evidence for a feathered thumb at the time. Given that scaly vs. feathered thumbs are both present in non-avialan and avialan maniraptorans, I don't think that's too much of a problem until we see a clear distributional pattern here.

Hey, thanks! I've actually been wanting to re-draw that scene, now that my grasp of paravian soft anatomy and my drawing skills are getting better.

Thanks! I've been drawing a way better remake of this scene, so ... some day, it will probably be finished and uploaded.

Beautiful patterning and IΒ΄m an advocate of theropods going for small prey whenever possible.

Thanks! I'm actually not that happy with this drawing anymore, so there might come some remake some day.

Excellent work. My favorite raptor. It's so very dynamic, and the snake thing is just priceless. I agree with you on the unenlagiines not having the 'four wing' condition. These things were very stork like, using their long snouts for catching submerged prey.

I think your reconstruction of Buitreraptor is very successful with the evidence we have today. Congratulations to achieve fig and respect their anatomy.

Thanks a lot for that; I actually recently rethought the illustration when Greg Paul's new "field guide" with a somewhat different skeletal arrived, showing stupendously small hands compared to the rest of the forelimb skeleton.

Muchas gracias for such a positive comment from the actual namesake of this theropod

Great drawing, I love how the poses of Buitreraptor and the snake are frozen in mid-action. It really looks like a freeze-frame moment in time. I can envision the drawing suddenly coming to life and the raptor shifting its weight as it closes its jaws on the snake and commences whipping it back and forth to break it's back.
