Thumbs up for a dramatic foreground and background! Nice color contrasts too. I don't know how vibrant the original is, but you can always go back and edit the picture for increased vibrancy and then upload it again if you feel that this version has lost something in the translation. I've made changes to photos too, even after I had posted them. But anyway, it sure looks nice to me!

The thing is that the export from Lightroom looks good, but the upload to DA changes it somehow. This happens with many of my pics. I'll show you the difference this summer.

I just love this image, it has a great feel. I can see what you mean about lack of detail, but only in the largest size. Looks great in regular view.

Many thanks, Barbara! I posted this one mainly because it gives a sense of the range the bison have here.
I'm still trying to figure out why some of my images degrade upon upload and some don't. Even my computer savvy daughter is mystified after having tried different ways of exporting this image with no better results. And she agrees with me that there is a noticeable difference. But then she's the only one besides me who can see the pre-upload image for comparison. 'Tis a mystery...

It does that, very well.
I suspect that the gurus on DA don't know either. All software has it's little quirks....

I tried what you suggested (.jpg, 1024 and it was already in sRGB)... and it looked worse. (The version that I posted is in .tif format, btw, not .png which was my Elements export mode.) I've now got my daughter on the case and she is mystified. She's tried different ways of exporting and nothing seems to make it better. The uploaded image is pixelated compared to the original. My daughter says this does not make any sense since there were plenty of pixels to begin with. Anyhow, don't worry about it... you've put enough time into it. I'll do some research and see if I can come up with something.
Note from daughter: So I've tried what you suggested and there was still a super noticeable degradation in quality. I feel like I must be missing something obvious, since I'm unfamiliar with LightRoom. At first I thought my mom was just not saving as a web file until the last second and so was horrified when her photos made the jump over to 72 pixels per inch, but no. The jump over is way worse than it should be, and I am not at all sure why. Tried a couple of different file extensions just to see if that made a difference, but it really didn't. Then I thought maybe she'd auto-sharpened and lost quality there, but she hadn't. Gonna try a few more things, but I dunno if I can fix this. D: ...Any other ideas? Maybe it's just something to do w/ this specific photo, idk. So weird!
Edit: So I'm beginning to think it's just a case of getting used to our new retina screens... =__=;;

What size photo are you uploading here? I've found anything much over about 1000 get squishy...
love the lines in this with the varying colors and textures with the pop of the buffies

I tried down-sizing it to 1000 but then it got squishy before I even uploaded. Maybe I should try a different format...

how about - if you've got the option, it is one of the choices in Photoshop - "saving to Web" ? Some swear by it...

Maybe dA site compresses image as it loads? I believe FB does that. Still...nice shot.

I wouldn't say you're doing anything wrong....I'm not much of a photographer, but I know some shutterbugs do some post processing in other programs such as photoshop and the like.

I've always wanted to get a shot in that location. And even though none of the bison were looking up, I liked the two wandering up to the ridge-line. I think it gives a sense of the freedom they still have here.

i am envious.... i want a shot like that for ME. I have vowed to photograph bison in the wild someday....
yes, i think for me i would want my photo of buffalo to have a sense of scale and space and open area... good job!
