Did you take a pic and smooth it out or are you just so damn good with your hand movement?

I start by making vectors with the different shades from the original then do a lot of smudging before cleaning it up with the selection and pen tools for the sharper lines. The shades and proportions are taken from a photo, I dont have the skills to create a face from scratch.

I have no Idea what you just said but I might be able to interpret it as you scanned a photo and did some shading and cleaning. Right?
