Description Another pic of a female red Jumping Spider, Phidippus whitmani, the first of this species I've ever seen, that I found today. She was entangled in a Kukulcania hibernalis web between the screen and the frame on the back porch door. This is just a stunningly gorgeous little animal, quite calm in demeanor for a Jumper, which usually are hyper little beasts.

I remember playing with a Zebra Jumper(I think that's it) when I was SUPPOSEDLY doing homework. I took my mechanicle pencil, got the lead to stick out as far as possible, and stuck an eraser shaving on the end. She acted just like a little bity cat!

No, she's not that big, actually. She's about half the size of my Phidippus audax, who is just slightly larger in diameter than a pencil eraser, so that should give you some indication of how small the P. whitmani is. I still have her, by the way. She is getting quite fat on the ant lions and small House Spiders(Parasteatoda tepidariorum)I feed her, and she's WAY calmer and more relaxed than my crack-baby P. audax!

This is the first one I've ever seen that was red, too, though I've seen lots of pictures. All of the Phidippus species I've seen up to this point have either been predominantly black-and-white, or silvery-gray with black and white. I found one Red-Faced Jumper, which has a little red "mask" around its eyes, but is otherwise gray, but that's it. I didn't even realize we had any mostly-red species, since most of them seem to be native to the western states.

I haven't seen one of these guys by me yet..mostly those gray and shades of gray like you mentioned. Though I did see this zebra striped one the other day..gotta see if I can find her and get her pic! They are all so cool. I love how they look at you too..like that are plotting something! LOL

This is really good. I do believe this photo so sharp that I can sit here and count the hairs on her legs. Wonderful on all counts.
