Description "The Emerson's humble beginnings started with the automobile boom of the early twenties. Starting in a small shed in Detroit, Michigan the Emerson brothers originally built the rubber soles for windshield wipers for Hupmobile. The two moved slowly towards building more and more parts for the company until eventually the two had amassed a small task force, a building, and the enough parts to create their own company (circa 1922) and commenced production in 1924. By the time the Model J was built, the Emerson brothers had a facility that allowed them to produce 3000 cars a year. The Emerson standard was high enough to compete with other luxury cars of 1930, such as Packard's and Rolls Royce's. The Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton (and subsequent Coupe) both boasted a varnished wood interior and a 160 HP V-16 engine. The Model J was built in 1930 with 228 Dual Cowl models made, 521 sedans, and 2302 coupes. In 1931 the depression hit the company hard, and only 43 Dual Cowl Phaeton's made it off the assembly line, with 176 sedans and 403 coupes before the lines were halted and the company was forced to file bankruptcy and then close later that year. The Emerson brothers later signed into the military and fought for America on the Pacific front. While both survived the war and were able to return home, the Emerson Automobile company was never restarted- despite multiple tries"
