Important Note: I tried uploading here the newer zip file for the new 1.2 edition of the e-book but I couldn't do it like before because it gave me some sort of error so the file that is here really is still the 1.1 version of the e-book if I'm not mistaken so to download the latest 1.2 version go to this alternate download link in my Mediafire folder:

www.mediafire.com/folder/cuc82…

Look for it in the E-Books folder. Sorry for the inconvenience - PixelOz.

______________________

This is a free e-book that I just finished writing about how to design paper models (card models). It is based mainly on the freely available open source program Blender 3D and an illustration program of your choice but it teaches a lot of the most important fundamentals of 3D paper model design that have the tendency to give a wee bit of trouble to new designers. It is 227 pages long and has hundreds of full color illustrations to help you understand the concepts of the e-book better.

You can download a zip file that contains the e-book in PDF format by clicking Download File at the right of this web page, it also includes some Blender 3D files that can be used for practice and an additional unfolding script to the one that Blender already includes that has other important capabilities.

The e-book also talks about the many different types of software that can be used to accomplish the task.

The most important thing that I discovered while researching the subject was that where new designers had the most confusion was not in some complex thing of the design process but in some fundamental principles that were not well understood and I set out to explain them carefully to give designers a head start, so here it is, free help for those that are trying to learn this art of paper model design.

I hope that this e-book really helps to make you understand the subject better.

Changes and improvements in the 1.2 edition of the book:

Note: Page numbers given here are for the new 1.2 edition of the book.

• Updated links for the Pepakura dragon (page 17). It has now a whole file set with assembly instructions and also links for a green version of the parts template (it is a slightly modified dragon pattern). Updated 6 other links that had become invalid in the book.

• In page 31 a new paragraph was added (the first one) to explain another difference that Illustrator has in the method of snapping to nodes while rotating with the Smart Guides compared to CorelDraw's Dynamic Guides method that I unfortunately forgot to mention in the first two editions of the book.

• In the software section I now included the free bitmap/image editors which I had left out in the previous versions of the e-book. In addition in this section I also talk about the updated layer effects script for the new Gimp 2.8 that could help a lot paper model texture artists that prefer to texture in bitmaps instead of illustration vectors.

• The software section is slightly reorganized and some explanations have been somewhat expanded.

• The book reflects updates to software program versions and changes in prices and in some cases it reflects changes or improvements to the programs.

• On page 57 I expanded the info on the second paragraph a bit to explain how now models unfolded with Pepakura and Ultimate Papercraft 3D can have much higher resolution textures than what I said before due to a new special version of Pepakura Designer that allows higher texture size and new info I found on the Ultimate Papercraft 3D web site information about higher texture resolutions with better graphic cards.

• On page 64 in the second paragraph, third sentence, at the beginning of that sentence where it says “The upper button (Edge gener.)” it should have been “The upper button (Face gener.)” instead. The Edge gener. is the lower button not the upper one so now this has been corrected finally.

• The text about the new Blender paper unfolding script called Export Paper Model that starts on page 65 has several changes related to the improvements and changes to this script and on pages 67 and 73 screenshots of the script have been updated.

• I originally stated incorrectly that CorelDraw X3 could not fill open shapes and this is not true. A bit of further investigation allowed me to find that CorelDraw X3 cannot do this by default but that it can do it with a special setting on the Tools\Options menu (more info on the book, page 71, second paragraph).

• In the third paragraph in page 71 I also added now alternative methods to join the separated segments of the main shape generated by the Export Paper Model script (the one made by Addam Dominec) in an automatic fashion in at least two more programs: Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape. Before, I only provided a technique for fixing this in Coreldraw with the Create Boundary function but there is a way to fix it quickly in at least Illustrator and in Inkscape. The 3 methods are all different and in Illustrator and Inkscape they are not a substitute for the Create Boundary function but they at least fix this particular problem automatically too.

• Small paragraph added on page 86 (before the last one) that explains a small trick to get the flattened pattern arranged in a slightly different way.

• New paragraph that starts on page 93 (after the second Hello Kitty photo) explaining a bit better the tricks used in the creation of the second Hello Kitty paper model.

• Fixed 3 dimensions illustrations on page 94 and 95 (the sphere and the cube). The arrows were in the wrong position (really don't know how I missed those before!).

• On page 174 (last paragraph) it said “the white tank” and that was a reference to an older photo of the 1.0 edition of the book but the photo was changed on the 1.1 edition (to a better quality one) and I fixed the text to match that and now it says: “the green bomb below the wing and the airplane's nose (the propeller's spinner)”.

• Chapter 8 – Recent Open Source Software Improvements has been completely updated to reflect the current state of the previously mentioned programs.

• Open Office has changed its name to Libre Office. This is explained better on page 224 (Chapter 8 - Recent Open Source Software Improvements). The book will reflect this so in every place where it mentioned Open Office it will now say Libre Office instead except in the aforementioned page where it talks about this change and the reasons for it.

• Several smaller writing corrections including a few typos and some small grammar corrections. Several double words were eliminated finally.

• Near the end of the book in the acknowledgments section I said Sonic and Knuckles and the second character is not Knuckles it is Shadow The Hedgehog so it should have been Sonic and Shadow (I do know the characters very well but somehow I jumbled the names).

• Updated the Blender CartoonishSubmarine1.blend file a little. Adjusted proportions a bit to make it somewhat more cartoonish (shorter front to back) and cleaned up the file a little in several vertexes and normals.

___________________________________________________________

New 1.1 edition! (Read text at bottom for list of changes)

Update: 1.1 Edition with the following changes:

• Creation of a high resolution version for printing or higher quality with redone rendered images. All of the rendered images have been re-rendered at higher resolution (2048 x 1536 pixels - 3 megapixels instead of 640 x 480 pixels for the low resolution version) and the same for many other bitmap illustrations or photos with the exception of screenshots. High resolution version also have less compression for even better image quality.

• Slight improvement of several images, photos or illustrations for more clarity.

• Correction of many typos and other errors.

• Several changes in different parts of the text, many of them reflecting changes or updates related to software but several other improvements too.

• Changes to software programs information to reflect software updates and prices for such. Update to corresponding updated software screenshots.

• I now indicate the software version number in the list of programs for all the commercial programs so you know what version the given prices correspond to. Even though I mentioned their versions sometimes in the text I didn't specify it in the list in some instances and now I did.

• Elimination of the All Rights Reserved Message. This message doesn't belong cause in modern copyright law it is not necessary to state such when it is desired to use it (when you desire to reserve all rights) in copyrighted material and the information of which rights are reserved is clearly explained in the copyright page of the book and the message was contradictory to it.

• Highlighting of menu items, commands, keyboard shortcuts, program functions, etc. Parts of the text that mention things like items from menus in software or labels of the functions of programs or commands in dialog boxes for example have been highlighted in bold letters for easier recognition.

• Several of the names for functions or commands in software (in menus or other parts of the interface) have been corrected to be exactly as they are in their respective programs for easier identification in them.

• Adding Homer Simpson like model picture and a few changes to corresponding text to explain better the concept of different orientations in the same model and/or part in page 84.

• There is now a description and basic information on the usage of the new Blender 2.5 paper model unfolding script called Export Paper Model From Blender in page 54.

• Corrected a few details of the Credits page and made some changes according to changes in some images.

• Inclusion of a new cartoonish submarine 3D model in the IncludedModels.zip file and a rendering of this and a description of the model in the book in the A Submarine section in chapter 6 – Designing Some Simple Models.

• Changed page numbers to different sides on odd and even pages.

• Corrected pictures and text of the circles with high nodes on pages 117 & 118. (It said 64 nodes and showed illustrations of 128 nodes and now it says 80 nodes and shows illustrations of 80 nodes.

• Fix for the image on Surface Development on page 120. The bottom of the full oval had a center oval that didn't belong that was left there by mistake when I did the illustration (a leftover), also the color of that oval that was beneath that one is supposed to be gray not blue-green cause it is for the full oval cone and not the truncated one.

• The Open Source software improvements section on page 206 has the new modified Blender 2.5 roadmap and corresponding changes to its accompanying text. It also mentions now the improvements to K3D in the newly released version 0.8 and the recently released illustration program sK1.

• In page 120 in the second paragraph almost at the end in the sentence that says: "If you want your outline pattern to be cleaner with less lines you decrease the value of the slider to a lower angle number until you are happy with the result or you decrease it if you feel that some fold lines in particular should be included." The second decrease word (shown here in bold) should really had been increase instead and now it is fixed.

• In page 132 in the second paragraph where it talks about paths and Bezier curves, there are improvements in the explanations cause it was a bit confusing between the use of Paths and/or Bezier curves.

• In the first edition of the book the key combination given for the Loop Cut tool is incorrect. It says Ctrl+K when it should be Ctrl+R or K and then selecting Loop Cut and now this has been corrected. This same text is now on page 153, second paragraph.

• Those parts of the text that mentioned CorelDraw's Dynamic Guides tool or its Illustrator equivalent (Smart Guides) now also reflect the addition of this tool to the program Serif DrawPlus which has recently added the tool to the program in version X4.

• In chapter 7 – A Bare Bones Way Of Creating Paper Models With A Computer I said in the previous edition of the book that I couldn't find a way to open the Cone Layout program generated patterns in Solid Edge 2D. I couldn't manage to open any AutoCAD files before in Solid Edge 2D and that is because there is a step that you have to do in the program before you are able to do this and this is explained now in the book in the section titled: The Confusion Between UV Texture Unfolders and Paper Modeling/Others Unfolder in chapter 2 – Modern Paper Model Design (page 48 third paragraph).

• An few hyperlinks have been updated.

• Page 219 has a new paragraph (second paragraph) that talks about my new PDF tutorial called: Clearing The Confusion Between Total Image Resolution, Image Size And Dpi.

• The definitions of texture baking and dithering have been added to the glossary.

• A few more Blender keyboard commands or icons/menu functions are given in different parts of the text. This is still no substitute to learning Blender by standard means and it's intended as a courtesy to people that are learning it to make it a little easier for them.

• The included 3D Blender models were fixed a little bit in some areas, some small quirks or errors were corrected (a few small ones). The sharp edges were marked and the Edge Split modifier was applied to all of them to all corresponding parts.

• It is 238 pages long now but this is due mainly to the expansion of the text because of the bold highlighting.

Thank you very much for writing and posting this!

I see that your first language was Spanish, and occasionally that makes it a bit difficult to read your writing (you have a tendency to write long sentences and paragraphs). I wouldn't mind helping out with the grammar and flow of it at all.

Again, excellent ebook, very detailed. Wish I'd known some of your tips earlier.

Tank you for this work. I need this book for my projects.
I read the book and is great.

Ya he leido el libro pero necesito saber como producir el unfold de una pieza que aparece texturizada dentro de Blender. ¿Es posible obtener en desdoblado texturizado directamente de Blender? I need the unfold mesh with texture or color, exported directly for Blender.

Is possible? or only texturize with 2d software (gimp, Inkscape).

PixelOz In reply to Berpardo [2010-08-01 08:56:41 +0000 UTC]

To Leozone:

I have no idea how much money a service bureau would charge at the moment to print this in a digital photocopier (and I mean a black and white one of course). There are some of those that print full duplex and its possible that they would print the book for you in black and white an put it in a binder for you if you take them the file in a USB device or a CD-Rom as they do for college students for projects and their thesis.

Do you have any idea if you could do that?

Try to find out if it is cost effective. The text would be much more readable for you but the pictures would be so so. What you can do is read the text and look at the pictures of the electronic file if you have any doubt about the black and white digital photocopier picture.

PixelOz [2010-03-26 23:02:29 +0000 UTC]

To Leozone:

I would love to do that but the issue at the moment wold be time because I'm working in other projects and I don't know if I will have the time that it would require to convert it for print because believe me it's not that simple.

The reason is that most of the pictures of the book were done at lower resolution (at 640 x 480) which is relatively high for an e-book but they are pretty low for a printed book. The screenshots and all the vector illustrations are not a problem because the screenshots stay at lower resolution no matter what and the vector illustrations are resolution independent but most of the 3D renderings would have to be redone at much higher resolution and a different file has to be created to insert the new high resolution renderings into it.

I do have all the 3D files setup already and they don't take that much to render at all in the PC that I have even at high res because I made the 3D pictures simple because of time constrains but it will take time that at the moment I don't have.

Another issue is that in print form most of the pictures save the cover and back cover would have to be black and white anyway because the book has way too many color pictures and printing the book in color would be prohibitively expensive. I took advantage of the fact that I was going to release the book in electronic format to include many more color pictures than would have probably been included in a real printed book so the simple solution that most publishers do is to print everything inside in black and white.

One issue is that sometimes images have to be adjusted in the contrast or the gray levels of the images to print more optimally as black and white cause if you just take color images and print them just like that without adjustment they sometimes loose a lot of quality and sometimes they become hard to read.

So you see it is not as simple as saying let's just print this physically, it takes quite a bit of work to prepare the material properly for print and I can't guarantee that I'll be able to do it at the moment. So at the moment sorry for that.
