The closest I've gotten to finding out what Hoosier means, is the "Who's there" theory..
And I've lived in Indiana my whole life, but still never found out a straight answer.

The reason behind this is Because Hossiers pronouce their R's very strong and we tend to slur our words alot when saying "Who's there" I know what you mean my grandma told me why we are called hoosiers I hope this is a good answer.

Hoosier literally means "An awkward, unsophisticated individual." But the term originated from the words. "Who's there?"
