Description Celestial Armor is the top-tier (T9) reward in the new Paragon Rewards system, which launched as part of CITY OF HEROES FREEDOM. As such, we packed the set with as much cool stuff as we could think of. For starters, it's one of the first 'fantasy' themed sets in the game and one of the first to offer a ton of back details. The set features a large number of weapon options (not all shown here made the final cut), a cool riveted 'tights' layer, and all the latest texture FX (reflection, glow, etc.). As if that wasn't enough, Celestial comes with the game's first energy wings, which flow and undulate courtesy of our amazing FX team. All together, a pretty epic package that's worthy of the T9 distinction.

Artistically, I was inspired by divine/religious iconography--hence the glows, light, and omega symbols spread throughout. Another little detail I enjoy is the power source on the firearms: a tiny pinpoint of white light. I was thinking of the baby universe that powers the Authority's carrier ship when I drew that, not that you'd ever guess that from the art.

Unlike others I can't compare your art vs. in game design as Freedom was my cue to leave CoH as paying subscriber. Since then I don't log in unless I have regular teaming with friends (only Tuesdays and Saturdays, if they ain't doing VIP only stuff).

Anyway, this one is amazing piece of art with awesome details to give any art lover orgasmic vibrations. Too bad you have better imagination than current CoH game engine so they couldn't have this wonderfull stuff in game as it had to be.

One point I had to make clear, anything from you worthy of T9 distinction in my humble opinion. Anything originated from your artwork add more awesomeness to the game. However I think I like them more in your art.

You're very kind, but you really oughtta see what the character artists are doing with normal maps these days--MUCH more realistic cloth folds than I ever thought we'd be able to do.

I, too, have to agree with the sentiments above. If the "accessories" looked like this in game, I'd have spent my last token to get them, especially the bow, shield and hammer. Still, I bought the rest and am pleased. Great work, David.

Well, thanks. Curious to see what you think of Fire & Ice.

Hmmm. Guessing that's the next set in the cycle. Got one token left at the moment, and at least a couple of characters in mind....

It is indeed. Not sure how they'll be splitting up the parts into different categories, but there are a LOT of parts.

Looks awesome on the pixels as it were, unfortunately in game most of the set is tinted/reflect mapped so that it ends up being unable to mesh up color-wise with pretty much any other costume piece I care to throw on.

And what's worse, as I only make female characters, is that one of the belt options clips with literally every single skirt option out there. I can't see how the modellers managed to miss that.

Well, actually I can, making it on a male model and porting it over to the female as an afterthought. It upsets me that I can't have the cooler looking belt with the metal straps coming down over a skirt to make it look like one solid piece. Or that I can't use much of the set at all due to its inability to play well with the color scheme.

I'd love to have a non-reflective version.

The 3D artists seem to be handling tints a little more as you'd expect now. Stay tuned.

I have to agree with Rouge on this one. These drawings are so freaking suh-Weeeeeeeeet.

But the hammer-axe hybrid in game doesn't look as cool, the guns don't even come close to the awesome here...and the bow got dropped entirely. Sad robotic panda. And the shield...did we get the shield?

Still, this is awesome. Reminds me a bit of the trailer for Hellgate: London, I think. Awesome stuff.

With all due respect to Paragon Studios, David. They truly suck sometimes at translating your awesome concepts into actual models...
We could have a hammer and an axe that weren't the same model... we could have had a shield or a bow. we could have had cool looking guns instead of ones that look like tubes with a single tron-line. We could have had two different versions of the helmet.

I know you've mentioned it before: that it all tends to come down to time and being realistic with things, and to be honest, I actually like the Celestial armor for the most part as it is now, but I see this and see a very impressive spread of mostly "what could have been."

Concept and 3D are pretty different art forms. There are a lot of technical reasons why certain things aren't achievable in 3D, so take it with a grain of salt, I suppose. Our 2D work is meant to inspire a direction for the 3D artists to aim for, but we all know that it's not going to translate 1-to-1.

....suh-WEET.

I really hope at some point in the future thought is given to granting us those awesome pieces we've missed from here, especially the weapons and facemasks.

Who knows. Anything is possible, and even some things I NEVER thought we'd do are now being seriously considered. Very interesting times to be at Paragon.
