I think this a beautiful photo, portrait. Sometimes it's kinda hard to get the perfect angle, and background for the current person! But ... at this point, i say you got it right. Perfect background, and perfect angle. Congrats! Well done. Definetly fav

i honestly cant see anythign wrong. You've managed to capture such an earnest expression and the texture of the wall simply compliments his wrinkles. perfect.

Very nice. I like the tones. Was there much post production to this shot?

i almost missed this piece, david. and it would be a pity because i do enjoy this one as well. esp. the background.
i like this one slightly better than the `on duty', maybe because it is more _focused_, you got closer and it's seen.))
do you use any sharpening tool? i always get a slight blur in my photos after resizing -- in case the shot gets no further crop it usually takes 4x smaller picture. i use cubic interpolation in gimp.

david, just looked over this photograph as a thumbnail in your gallery. and maybe i got a wee bit of critique for you.
as seen from larger distance, i can sense a space not only on the left but there is a slight margin over his head too. it's not as obvious as the space on the left. but it might add and maybe even cause the confusion about `the spaces' ...
so maybe if cropped from the top, the space on the left would look much more natural and acceptable. this way, the man seems to me as being cropped into the phot, but not fully...

one of tricks for sharpening in Photoshop: duplicate layer you want to sharpen, apply High Pass filter, use Hard Light and set opacity within 15-35% (or according to your taste). You might also try to oversharpen shot before resizing if resize makes it blured.

In this case, I think the image is too sharp. It would be OK on his face, but the wall is in strange combination of out-of-focus and sharpness (I guess it is because of using the high pass filter). I would try masking out the wall behind on the sharpened layer. Or maybe positioning the guy further from the wall and taking advantage of DOF. Just an idea...

thanks for constructive comment: you are right with the idea the wall might be more blured and you are right high pass filter has been used, however the effect of high pass filter is very low (3px and 16% layer opacity) and is hardly visible in his face. that semi-sharpness of the wall as you can see it on the right side is natural - it is there even without any corrections. unfortunately playing with DOF by moving that guy was not possible in this case - stepping 20cm ahead and he would be in direct sunlight, which created strong contrats shadows and destroyed much of his face's details ... the overall sharpness and possible oversharping in his face should be considered while keeping two things on mind: a) you watch this one on a computer screen and every screen has different quality b) this is resized copy with some 500kB file size, the original file has some 3800x2600 px, 64MB and primary medium where it should be watched is paper

sounds promising. esp. the `oversharpening' method might at least be fun. i'll give it a try...

i really like it, only crit i can give is that i find the white worn part of the wall(on the left side) detracts alot from the face. I think it would be a lot more impactful if the wall is made a little darker.(or the light parts at least) But as usual, this is a excellent shot. Keep well.

first thought - too much space on the left, but it's automatic thought
I like it that way much better - the look of his face is great, the details are so sharp, amazing for me
well done
much, much better on full view!
