Description In the 1990s, the US agreed to transfer two  Knox-class frigates to the Philippine Navy (PN). The Philippine Navy anticipating its upgrade its anti-submarine warfare capabilities. Two ships are configured for both ASW and surface attack. The transfer of two ex Knox-class were also meant to replace the Fletcher and Gearing-class Destroyers to strengthen its naval combat patrols to survey its territorial waters in the South China Sea as Soviet, Chinese and North Vietnamese warships' presences are growing.

The Knox-class frigates were the largest, last, and most numerous of the US Navy's second-generation anti-submarine warfare (ASW) escorts.

The ships armaments are consist of 1 × 5 in (127 mm)/54 caliber Mark 42 gun, 1 × Mk-16 8–cell ASROC launcher and 2 × dual Mark 32 Mark 46 torpedo launchers. Prior to the delivery to the Philippine Navy, a Mk-16 8-cell Harpoon/ASROC box launcher and SM-1MR Standard missile in box launchers were also fitted.  A Phalanx 20mm CIWS was also added and it can carry a single MBB Bo-105 helicopter onboard.

The ship's speed is maximum of 27 knots (50 km/h; 31 mph) with the maximum range of 4,500 nmi (8,300 km; 5,200 mi) at 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph)

These two ex Knox frigates  are named Datu Kalantiaw PFG-29 (ex USS Roark FF-1053) and Datu Sikatuna PFG-30 (ex USS Gray 1054), after pre-colonial Philippine rulers.

Throughout the 90s, they were considered as the most modern assets of the Navy. These ships were the mainstay of the Philippine Navy up to the 21st century alongside Garcia-class. The ship were decommissioned in 2019 and was succeeded by Jose Rizal-class FFG.
