Description Update (3/18/13)

  • Updating her photo set(that Mirrors Aumangea 's.

  • Tipuna no longer has her turaga robe thing made of corrugated tubing. It was kind of a fail and made her too bulky.

  • Updated information.

About the MOC
"Tipuna" is a Maori word.

(noun) ancestor, grandparent, grandfather, grandmother - eastern dialect variation of tupunaMaori is the language Lego used for many of the names of early bionicle characters, some taken directly from a meaning. In the spirit of classic bionicle, I chose to use Maori for her and Aumangea's name(Aumangea means Be strong, persistent, brave, resilient, etc).

Tipuna is part of two sets, one with Aumangea , Leebos and the Reta-Sarka-V12

Then her and the other two figures comprise half of a 6-piece set .

-----------
Turaga Tipuna marks my first ever Turaga build She is also the second part to a three part set. Featured in this Deviation

Bio
Tipuna, also known as Mahri-Nui's lost Turaga. Tipuna was the Turaga of the coastal village of Vuya-Nui-the village that later became Mahri-Nui when it broke off and sank to the ocean floor. However, she was away in a Turaga counsel meeting when the disaster struck. The loss of her village and Matoran was devastating and left her incredibly traumatize. Other Matoran and Turaga had to put Tipuna in "protective custody" to keep her from diving down to The pit, which would have resulted in her being mutated. After many years of being kept on Voya-Nui, The other Turaga sent her to the northern Continent to reside there. She then re-assumed her responsibilities as a Turaga there.
Tipuna is a Strong-willed and resilient Ga-Turaga. Having faced terrible hardships and living on made her so. This also makes her what some Matoran view as "insane." Tipuna has been known to face excessive dangers without so much as batting an eye, like crossing the Tren-Krom Peninsula by herself, only armed with her staff. She's also been known to kill dangerous Rahi that attacks her village, rending the need for a toa almost non-existent. While a Turaga, she displays more characteristics of a Toa.

Thanks. Glad you like her. I think the KauKau nuva suits her, and I'm not really worried about who wears what mask or what story implications it has. If a mask looks good on a MOC, I'll use it.

Well, where to start with this MOC? It is truly a gorgeous creation and I congratulate you for it! I've always wondered what a good design for a Turaga would be, and this is it!

So, first of all, let's look at the parts used and how they were used; with a mixture of Bionicle, Technic and LEGO parts, this is a very nicely designed creation as far as that goes, and a very intriguing one.

The originality is hard for me to speak of since I don't normally look up Turaga MOCs in favour of Toa and Makuta. This also doesn't include your other MOCs, though since they're YOURS then I wouldn't count it against you. However, I've never seen an MOC quite like this one before so I give it full marks for originality.

The technique used to create this is very clever, especially the use of Minifigure legs as 'fingers', which gives the MOC a very 'movie-form' look that I absolutely ADORE! Other parts of the technique are a mystery to me, so I'm curious as to how to build a Turaga like this one.

So, to conclude, this is a great design that I think is absolutely fantastic and very pose-able. I rate it very highly in the designs that I have seen (along with many of your other works which I checked out while writing this) and wish to congratulate you one being able to make something so great. Personally, I'd love to ask for some basic instructions on how to make a basic 'frame' of this model.

Thanks for the Critique. Tipuna was my second attempt at small bionicle figure building. I've seen some turaga before, but they're mostly revamps. I've only seen a few original Turagas, so it felt like the thing to do, especially since I needed a driver and passenger for the Reta-Sarka.

Umm yeah sure. You can use them if you'd like. You let me know, so that covers my first rule. Give me credit for anything that you used of mine, that'll cover my second rule, and if I like it, let me post it in my gallery to show it to my followers, that's my third rule, but doesn't always apply to everything.

So what are you makeing, and what exactly would you be using?

Thanks. That's what I was going for. I'm gonna try and redo her vest so it looks more distinguishable from the MOC. I just recently downloaded the movies. I'm gonna re-watch them and get ideas for what I could do.

Hmpf cool, I like the idea of rebuilding characters with their movie-like looks.
If others would do the same, then I'd go for a movie Nidhiki

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Alex-Darkrai [2012-02-27 22:23:05 +0000 UTC]

This isn't to be a specific character, I just remember that they gave the turaga those cloth things so I tried to replicate that, but In ended up giving her a vest. I may keep the vest, but it needs to be a different color to distinguish from the figure's body. Plus I was trying to go for those cloth things they had. There's a slew of characters I liked the way they dressed them up for the movie, Krekka, Kihkinallow, the Rahkshi, and...I think that's it. I'd have to watch the third movie again. Nidhiki I wasn't too fond of in the movie version.

TymenMuller [2012-02-22 01:23:17 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I must say that even though I like the use of standard lego pieces on this MOC I believe it makes hear appearance a bit to square-ish and it really doesn't fit with the mask.

Oh and... did you take apart Gali Nuva for this?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to TymenMuller [2012-02-22 04:50:58 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm I like the blockiness. Though her vest makes her look really blocky to. I'm not too satisfied with that in hindsight, but I don't what else I can do to get the look of a turaga wearing those robe things with what I have to work with.

I've taken Gali Nuva apart ages ago, both of them. I don't keep my sets together. All I've got together is a Lerak bohrak, Lewa-Nuva, a black Rahkshi, and a white Vahki. Those last two were painted to be given detail.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TymenMuller In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2012-02-22 09:30:44 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, shame, I would have kept the Gali set.

You could probably ask your mother to whip up something out of real cloth for the robe, that's what I would do. Actually, I'd probably try making one myself first but I know my mum is much better with those kind of things than me, hehe.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to TymenMuller [2012-02-22 17:07:24 +0000 UTC]

Nah. I took all my sets apart. I used to collect them, then they started piling up so I took em apart. I used to buy two, one for display, one for play, then the display sets came down and that's how I got most of my collection of parts.

No thanks. I'm a purist. I'd want to make it work using lego elements. Its more challenging and limiting, but when you really can pull it off its more rewarding.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TymenMuller In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2012-02-22 21:16:43 +0000 UTC]

Ah, you bought two of every set, that explains why you have so many parts. Damn, I wish I did that as a kid. I probably didn't have the money then but I still wish I did...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to TymenMuller [2012-02-23 08:05:32 +0000 UTC]

Pretty much. But doing this and not getting enough technic sets has left me with a fuck ton of bionicle parts and not as much of the technic kind of parts used to make MOCs. I got all these bricks to build a wall, but little mortar.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TymenMuller In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2012-02-23 08:13:57 +0000 UTC]

Heh, I actually had that very same problem today when making Riyahh. I took apart some Bionicles but I didn't really have enough technic parts to build another large moc. Instead I just built a smaller Bionicle, Toa sized.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to TymenMuller [2012-02-24 14:56:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. I've had to do that before. But with my collection its more like "I can still build this big thing, but I can't do it like this cause i don't have enough of these," *figures out alternative means of achieving goal*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TymenMuller In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2012-02-24 16:04:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, sometimes you need to think a little outside the box for things to work. Riyahhs head for example, I knew I wanted it to look a certain way with those wing-type things and those eyes, I just had to try a lot of different parts and combinations before I finally go it right.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to TymenMuller [2012-02-24 16:25:14 +0000 UTC]

That's usually what I do. There's a lot of trial and error in my MOCing. I actually make up most of it as I go along. Very little is actually planned out with my MOCs. The Innenrrad was my most preconceived MOC. Meaning I actually thought of how to arrange the parts or tackle certain problems before actually building the MOC.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to SideShowShayne [2012-02-21 23:45:28 +0000 UTC]

Well that's probably her "vest" that's supposed to be those turaga robes they have in the movies. She is still kinda blocky, but not as bad. I shoulda taken a picture of her without it. :/ But yeah, you don't see too many Turaga these days.

Akara0820 [2012-02-21 20:31:53 +0000 UTC]

There's some error in the story- it says at the northern Continent she became a turaga. Wasn't she already one?

Also, what software do you use to make the picture compilation (and the copyright picture)?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Akara0820 [2012-02-21 20:44:13 +0000 UTC]

No, I mean she became a turaga there. As in she took on the responsibilities of one. There's Turaga in the sense that that's what stage in a matoran's life they're in, or in the sense that they are the leader of a village. SHe became a Turaga elsewhere, but became one of the Turaga on the Northern Continent.

I use for my compilations. The pictures I find on google image search. Are you referring to the watermark on the deviation? That's a setting you can turn on when submitting. Its right under the box for uploading the file.

Akara0820 In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2012-02-22 02:16:06 +0000 UTC]

If by watermark you mean (c) insert url here, yes.

And if so, is it the creative commons box?

If not, help nooby asian.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Akara0820 [2012-02-22 04:47:03 +0000 UTC]

No. The watermark I'm talking about is how there's a slight discoloration on the center of the image that has the DA logo and says copyright 3rdeye88.DeviantArt.com That's the water Mark. The option to turn that on is with the size display option and download option in the submission form. You know the box that you click to select the file that's going to be uploaded? its those options right under that.

Yeah, that's just what came out when I tried to write the bio. But I think that goes with the MOC and the overall appearance she gives off. She's tough cause she's endured a lot.

Hmmm. I've got a lot of doubts about this. Its currently a "vest" but its supposed to give the shape of those robes the turaga from the movies wore. You know what I'm referring to?
