Wow, this is beautiful! The dapple is absolutely gorgeous! I wish my horse had some color like that, around here you can really only find sorrels and bays. However, I love them just the same.
This is just wonderful!

Lovely piece, you've come a long way from your equine works two years ago! I love your expansive environment and how the two are interacting. It's good to see more than just a simple horse standing around in a plain field, but something of more substance and consideration. It was interesting to see it all come together in the progress shots.
One thing you might want to consider is using more of your background colors in your subjects, even if it's just a slight hint that might go unnoticed, it really helps to settle the subject into the environment and keep them from looking like they were just stuck on there. Not that they look pasted in, but they could be a little more "settled" than they are.
Structurally they look great, especially through those lovely hips of theirs. The shoulders on both seem a little steep and the humerus a bit upright and short, but they are within the range of conformational variance, just not quite in the "ideal" that a conformation judge might look for.
I look forward to seeing more such lovely works and was happy to read that you have a few more already in progress! Enjoy and happy painting!

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave me such a well thought out and helpful comment! I truly appreciate it!
I definitely see what you are saying about bring in some of the background colors onto the subject. Especially the black horse to me seems a little too unnaturally lit. If I get a chance to retouch this one I will definitely try adding just a soft touch of blue and green to the shadowy areas.
It's amazing how much taking a step back for a few weeks and looking at a picture again changes how you see it. I can really see the shoulder issues much more clearly. I made some changes to the piece I am working on right now because of it. Thank you so much for helping me see it!

You're most welcome. I know the more advanced one gets in a skill, the harder it becomes to get descent critique and it's always nice to see an artist continuing to seek such input and continually trying to improve. Thanks for being so open to it!
Tweaking the shadows a little will help, but also consider the quality of the light and how that will affect the hue and "warmth" or "coolness" of the highlights as well.
Agreed, some pieces need a break during the working process even in order to appreciate the progress one has made or recognize where it is just a little "off." I've had a few pieces that have benefited from some time spent away from them before digging back in.
I'm glad to be of help, it keeps my inner art instructor happy *grin.* Once again, you are most welcome!

Do I spot a Bob Ross reference in there?
"happy little trees"
Jeez it's so discouraging how many of these young artists don't know who Bob Ross is. He may be a silly guy to watch but he's got some serious talent with a fantastic technique.
Anyways, if you don't know what I'm talking about. That's okay too! You brightened my morning with those happy little trees. xD
I dunno why but your painterly style has always reminded me of something you'd see in an equine history book, I'm gonna look up the exact era later because I can't think of it now, but it's a very nice style that I very much admire.

Wow... this reminds me of my own horse who has passed away and my friend's horse. My horse was a flea bitten gray, and my friend's horse is black. Mine passed away on the 29th of July.
