Description Leave me then to dream in wormwood -
those malignant little demons
spilled in the mind-drift of my nights -
and steal me from my fitful rest.

Those malignant little demons
slip nightshade through the windowsills
and steal me from my fitful rest -
the cruelest jest, a poet's fears.

Slip nightshade through the windowsills
and leave the emerald juice to rest.
The cruelest jest a poet fears
is madness come home to roost.

Leave the emerald juice to rest.
Spilled in the mind-drift of my nights
is madness come home to roost.
Leave me then to dream in wormwood.

This reminds me of Blok. Feels like Blok. No, feels like how one feels when one reads Blok. Yes, that's it. It's yummy, kiddo.

This was both enjoyable and educational for me! I didn't know what the pantoum form of poetry was so I had to look it up, and I love this form. I will have to try it for myself one day. And this poem is amazing. You have quite a way with words that I admire. Beautiful imagery. Great piece.

Poetrymann In reply to jadesfires [2011-12-20 14:29:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I am very glad you like it. This form is supposed to rhyme, but mine does not.

jadesfires In reply to Poetrymann [2011-12-21 05:21:29 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. And, hey, you can't have everything, lol. I would think that the form itself would be challenge enough without the extra pressure of making it rhyme as well. I like it the way it is.

brunette-from-oz [2011-12-19 09:57:30 +0000 UTC]

I never heard of a pantoum but really enjoyed the woven and repetitive imagery!

Poetrymann In reply to brunette-from-oz [2011-12-20 14:28:30 +0000 UTC]

Repetitive imagery is big in fixed form. In some ways, it makes things easier, but in others...not so much.

Ah, that word. Really, brain loops are a fearsome thing. Wormwood automatically and without hesitation has me reciting I Am Not One of Those Who Left the Land by Anna Akhmatova. It's awful and I always have to cut the thought short. But I digress. Altogether, very clever sir. I'm always surprised by how much I enjoy the way you make words lean on and weave into one another. Wormwood, artemisia absinthium, how very thin the line is between medicine and poison. Much appreciation.

Poetrymann In reply to DecemberForge [2011-12-20 14:27:28 +0000 UTC]
