Description
Though considered one of the greatest slayers of monters before the days of Hercules, Bellerophon is mainly known for taming Pegasus and killing the Chimera before his hubris led to him falling into obscurity. Fewer recall his given name. After causing the death of one Belleros, the epithet Bellerophontes (often shortened to Bellerophon) overshadowed his natal name of Hipponous. It is said that he was fathered by Poseidon and raised by Glaukos, the King of Corinth. Among his feats, he fought against the Amazons and a notorious pirate, and he became King of Lycia. He is last known for trying to ascend to Mount Olympus astride Pegasus, but was struck down by Zeus. He fell, was blinded, and wandered the world a broken man.
But perhaps there are more stories to discover about this son of Poseidon...
