Description

Near the back of the room, the boys noticed Maurice was hovering over a strange, lumpy silhouette. Remembering who they came here for, the two of them bounded towards him, slowing and silencing their excited steps when Maurice forcefully shushed at them. Using slow and gentle movements as if they were walking on a frozen lake, they peered over the frame of the nest, and to what treasure it held inside.

Their eyes widened at the startling sight…they couldn't believe it. They felt their breathing hitch painfully in their throats, and a giant knot seal them shut. Blue Eyes let out a worried whimper, feeling his eyes start to tremble and well up. "How did this happen?" he shakily signed to Maurice, looking up from the broken body of his lifesaver.

Maurice looked to his nephew to speak, but was taken aback before he could say anything. The painstaking look on the young boy's face was heartbreaking, and he could barely manifest the courage to raise his hands. "After I found you boys on the beach, she fled at the sight of me…of us. After Rocket heard my call and came to take you home, I ran after her. She must've been scared senseless, cause when I found her, she was unconscious at the bottom of a high ridge."

The young chimps stared awestruck at their crimson guardian, and then back at the sleeping, broken child, not believing their ears. "I knew that this abandoned human shelter was nearby, so I took her here where I knew she would be safe."

"Poor Sarah…" Ash signed in between wiping his nose and eyes, feeling himself getting emotional.

"She'll be OK though, right?" Blue Eyes asked, begging and praying with all his young heart that what they were doing wasn't for nothing.

Maurice solemnly smiled, and placed his hand overtop the prince's, which enveloped it completely. "She'll be just fine, young ones…that I can promise."

The sky-eyed prince felt the comforting warmth around his smaller hand, and the small reassurance was enough to lift the weight of the world off his shoulders. Ash stared into the bedding with worried, knitted brows. He too felt a mass lifted from his chest after hearing the bracing relief, and raised his head to the pair before him. "What are we waiting for? Let's get to work!"

Maurice and Blue Eyes turned to their companion, and shared a determined smile. "You're right!" said the young royal, and turned to their larger friend. "Show us what to do, Uncle! We can do it!"

Maurice was so grateful to have such eager helpers by his side, completely forgetting about his earlier anger towards them. Spreading out the tools and supplies from his bag to the floor in front of him, he quickly explained what each necessity did and how to use it, and got right to work!
