Description OK, I have to admit to a little showing off with the custom 7th Doctor here. I did a pretty fun customization I've seen where you cut the top of the head off the unsmiling head of the 7th Doctor and make it so you can fit the hat on it. It's a bit easier than i thought though I still had to guess at what I was going to do. I also needed to resculpt his hair on the sides a little with a Dremel tool and repaint the hair a bit as well. Sen to the right a little is my custom 10th Doctor that I gave proper wrist articulation to. Next, the 10th Doctor needs bicep rotation joints!

I need some help, the figure is a custom I need to do. How many more figures am I going to have to buy to do this? I've got one hatted head and one solemn head with no hat. Do I need to buy two more figures with two more heads?

No, just the two is all you need. You'll need to carefully remove the hat from one head. then carefully use a straight edge razor to cut the section of the head that was under the hat off to reuse on the new head. Then take the more serious faced head and lightly mark where on the forehead you want the hat to sit and do the same on the back of the head. I used a pen and marked just above where I wanted the hat to sit so I could cut the pen mark off. Then I worked slowly and carefully, cutting from the front to the back to remove the top of the head always trying to keep an even cut so the head will be flat on top. After I removed the top of the head, I test fitted the hat by inserting the section the hat was glued to and placing the whole thing on the head. I did a little extra trimming with the razor to make sure when the hat was glued on you wouldn't see any seams. One I had that where I wanted I put a small dot of heavy super glue (Gorilla Glue is what I used) on the center of the top of the head and carefully lined up the he hat with the top of the other head inside and pushed it on. Only use a small dot because if you don't like where it's placed you won't be able to remove it and try again. Once I was satisfied I removed the hat and proceeded to use a toothpick to glue the rest of the top of the new head on all around. Once dry I tried the hat again to make sure it didn't change, if it did I would have used a dremel to remove some of the post the hat sits on to make it sit better but if you go slowly and always double check you shouldn't need to. Last I used a small round bit in a dremel to work any of the hair on the sides out where any of the flat cut was and then touched up the hair with paint. I used red brown acrylic mixed with black paint to darken it for my base coat, then just the red brown mixed with a little tan for a dry brushing the highlights which is as close to the original color it was painted with as I could get. Last I sanded the hat anywhere that the paint peeled from removal till it was smooth and then touched it up using flat tan acrylic. Once that was dry I test fitted the hat again, and then glued the hat permanently in place. It sounds more complicated than it is but it really only took me an hour to do all that. XD For paints I used Testors Acrylics and some Tamaya acrylics all in flat tones to match the originals.

Hope all that helps, mate. ^_^ Any questions let me know and I'll try to explain.

Actually, scratch all that. I just found an Ebay sale for a brown coated body and both heads, my lucky day er... well, night actually. I'm gonna make a custom with the heads I've got, and in no more than a week I'll have all three versions. It's the perfect plan!

I just don't feel that I own the Seventh Doctor in figure form yet. Character Options gave us two duds. Not because the figures were crappy in the sculpting or accuracy or anything, it's just that Sylv never ever grinned like that. Or at least not often. And he hardly ever took his hat off either. I'm pretty sure it was glued to his head for the first season at least. I have to take this risk ><;;

I would wait to customize till you see the other heads. Just in case the eyes are painted poorly or something. Took me three tries to find a solemn face that I liked OK. Still though that is a great score! I wound up with three brown suited bodies and one really nice head for the figure. XD

I don't recall how often he grinned though. XD I did put the unhatted head on the cream suited figure since he was more serious there and didn't wear his hat often in Remembrance of the Daleks. XD

I'm not exactly the patient type, but I get what you mean. I don't think they'll come deformed or anything, but... hmm.... it'll take no longer for a week for the spare figure and the spare heads to arrive, and I was almost going to uh... "operate" today.

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained" is the phrase would use here and the phrase which I think fits this little operation on his head/s. Maybe I'll wait, but maybe I won't. I might get back to something else first though while I thnk it over.

Well, not deformed really but badly painted. Luckily I have a spare hat now that I carved out completely hollow with a dremel tool to use as a hand prop for the Doctor I have it and the umbrella and a spare 4th Doctor hat hanging off the hat stand for the Tardis. XD

Yes, my only thing is that it would be a shame to cut up your best heads for this and risk them when you can possibly use a slightly less perfect head to make the custom. Mine has a wonky left eye and used to have a badly painted hair line but since I worked on the hat the hairline problem is fixed and the eye is barely noticeable with all the other detail going on by the added hat. My best advice but it's up to you of course when or on what you'll be doing the customizing on, I'm just a meticulous, picky bastard that's anal about details. XD

Oh, is that all? XD;

The thing is, I really want to have all three versions, the original grinning head with his hat on, the solemn head that came with the 11 Doctors set and one solemn head with the hat. I've considered buying another figure or two spare (one could become a TV movie version) but what I really need are two spare figures of the two different heads.

Either that, or... take the top part of both heads and make them interchangable? So I could have a hatless grinning head as well.

I've got the hat off the grinning head so far, that's as far as I dare go and it fits back on again anyway. I guess I could cut both heads in half somehow...

It really is more simple than it sounds, I'm just very picky about how I do thinks so it sounds more complicated. XD

I don't blame you though. I'm kinda shocked that CO didn't do that to begin with. As for making the head parts interchangable ummm...I tried that XD It actually didn't work. XD I originally was going to put the scalp from one figure onto the other but they just didn't line up at all. I would have had to resculpt the entire top of his head.

My best advice it to take your time until you're more comfortable with how you're going to do it and when you do, go slow. You can get more heads if you mess up but it helps if you treat it like you only have that one shot...oh and remember, if you're unsure, take off less than you think you need. You can always cut off and trim down but you can't add material.

I don't really have the tools or experience to sculpt and I don't think I've got any painting stuff either, so if I make a big mistake I'll be in big trouble. I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing.

Yeah... I've had a theory they wanted him grinning the first time because they wanted to make it sort of an update on the Dapol figure. Then they looked at Ghost Light and saw something different they could do, but forgot that the Doctor hardly ever grins like that or takes his hat off for long in the series. Or maybe it's the fault of that CEO guy who hates the 80s again, or lack of money to make a third figure, or something like that. Or maybe they expect anyone desperate enough to just find a way to customize it like this.

Trying to match the original CO paints for touching up is hard to do too. I managed to do it with 10 and with 8 but when I tried on 7 Noooooooooo way. XD Managed to match his hair color but flesh tones and the cream jacket are out. As for sculpting well, no point anyway if you can't mix matching paints.

Great job on the Seventh Doctor. I plan on doing that myself.

Thanks! It's not too hard but take his hat off first and definately figure out where you want the hat to fall on his head and if in doubt, cut less than you plan because you can always take more off. Also, use the sculpted thingie shaped thingie his hat is glued on to put the hat on the new head. So much easier. XD Great thing is, if you do it right the only thing you'd have to repaint is the fringe of hear just below the brim of his hat.

It's surprisingly fun to do XD The hardest part was retooling his hair on the sides to not look like you cut the top of his head off XD
